Basic work and webhosting machine

Any problems with these specs? It'll be on 24/7 and be used in a small shop where it'll be connected to business broadband and static IP:

Should be more than up to the job, is it not an idea to have two other HDD's in RAID1 for the programs/web site and a drive for the OS?

What OS you going to be running?

I can use any Microsoft OS ever invented. I was thinking Windows 7?

Maybe it is worth RAID.

I take it you'll be running the website with IIS? I have played with IIS 7 on my PC, Vista, and dislike it, I like IIS 6 more (Server 03, XP) but that's just my taste/what I was use to.

What exacly will you be hosting? Even a Q9550 is huge overkill unless you will be creating VPS's or something

Id go for a cheap 45nm dual, but if you have the money why not?

Also Xeons are built for this kinda stuff so you might want to consider that route, youll likely get longer life with a xeon if you want it to last longer than 5 years or so 24/7. Theres a server at work thats totally clogged with dust and hasnt been rebooted for years but the xeon in that is still running fine

Why are you getting such a high end machine for this task? Usually that's what you do with junky, old machines, not high end, brand new ones.

Hell no, it's build from scratch. It's also a work PC, to do basic word editing, web browsing etc... but primarily it's to host a website. I thought the Q9550 was quite hardcore, but I thought it might last a little longer.

Can anyone recommend a good Xeon then, I want to stick with LGA775 though.

the Xeon X3330 is equivilent to the Q9550, youll pay a small premiuim ofcourse because its xeon

the whole x3000 range mirrors the C2Q 45nm range but there are cheaper alternatives below that

Also i once read a report that heat is a large factor in processor life, for every 10c rise over 50c (average temperature) you can shave a year from a processors 5-10 year 24/7 life

What kind of website are you hosting? What's it for?

Are you using Server Side Scripting? Will you be running a database on the server as well? If so, what kind? Will you run forum software? Do you expect much traffic?

You could probably get away with finding some old Pentium III rig and using that, unless you plan on running some demanding code on your website or expect to get a lot of traffic.

Alec is right. that spec is overkill for a basic hosting machine, but it should work well. apache runs pretty lean. As for backup, I would recommend a daily backup to another drive instead of raid1.

fyi my q66 at stock was pleanty for a server..its the ram that ususaly makes all the diff..
i got 4 gigs laso ..im sure it will be fine...
