cmos battery/bios

umm yeah would a cmos battery not being in the pc cause issues like failed start ups where the video card doesn't display anything and where it hangs up and does nothing but act like it has booted up where u need to wait like 5 minutes or more for the bios to reset after unplugging the power cord.


bad thing for me the only people have messed with my computer insides is my dad and it was only been opened twice and this has only started happening yesterday after installing the latest nvidia drivers

If you had a Mac that would be true.

You would be fine without a CMOS battery as long as you did not lose power. Those batteries usually last a few years so unless youve had it for a while, you should be fine.

The only other thing I could think of would be if you had a strange motherboard or something special about it that would require the battery.

had the pc for 4/5 years now and i cant even get back on but as always fans, hdd and keyboard work just not the display

Do you have onboard video? If you do, take out your video card and turn on the onboard and see if it works.

Or you can see if you can boot into Windows safe mode. If you can,uninstal the nvidia drivers and see if windows loads normal.

k finally back on, I tried taking out the video card and clearing the bios to see if that would work. and it did not. I tried booting with only 1 ram at a time and no other peripherals in and again no good. and so i just left it reseated everything and made sure it was tight. I'm just gonna wait out until christmas/ get license and a job and use my psp when i can't get my computer to start.

Well, just go to WalMart and pay $3 to try it out. Maybe you have some freak motherboard.

Unless you dont need your PC ever again, then I wouldnt worry about it.

I was under the impression that the only thing the battery does is keep the BIOS values and power the clock when the comp is off.

Why would having no battery, and thus no power, cause such a problem when you can simply enter the values each time your pc starts (albeit you'd want to get a battery to save yourself the trouble)

Youre impression is correct.

PRAM battery for Mac causes problems so you want to replace it.

Why would having no battery, and thus no power, cause such a problem when you can simply enter the values each time your pc starts (albeit you'd want to get a battery to save yourself the trouble)

I had a PC with a flat MB battery once, and it worked fine except from losing the time at each powerdown.
HD and stuff like that was autodetected at startup like if they had just been installed.
