Judge Leonard Davis of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas issued a permanent injunction that "prohibits Microsoft from selling or importing to the United States any Microsoft Word products that have the capability of opening .XML, .DOCX or DOCM files (XML files) containing custom XML," according to a statement released by attorneys for the plantiff, i4i.

Anyway, thats the saddest attempt at trying to fight a large name company ive seen in awhile. I highly doubt anything will come of this other than that patent holder to do a major /facepalm coupled with some sobbing.Comment

Why is this only targeting .docx, and none of the other new office formats? They all use the same format architecture, as far as I know.
.docx, as well as the rest of the new formats (to my knowledge, anyways) are just zip file containers which hold xml files. These files contain the data necessary for saving documents.
I don't see why this would only apply to Word's xml file format.Comment
