2 Problems - Weird lag & PSU fan

    Problem 1:

During any game that I play, such as COD4 or BF2, I get strange consistent lag. I would describe it as: every 10 minutes, the game stutters (or freezes) for 1 sec every 5 sec for 2 min (still with me?), then goes away for another 10 min. It's worse when a map is first loaded too, but then keeps coming back.

I have all recommended requirements, except for maybe my CPU which may be out of date. I didn't have this problem before though.

Tried restarting, reinstalling (before I realized it was for all games, not one), closing background tasks, but none helped.

The only thing that helped was a defrag, which reduced the length of each studder, but did not completely solve the problem.

I'm thinking maybe its my hard drive, because it's getting pretty full (50% of 250GB), but didn't think this would cause this big an issue.. Thoughts?

    <-- specs.

    Problem 2:

This is a problem with my brother's computer. He was complaining about a noise that would start up and stop afterwards. We looked inside and it was the inside fan on a 600W Ultra (I know... it came with a good barebone deal) PSU.

We checked temps, CPU activity, but nothing was out of the ordinary. His specs:

    Q6600 @ 2.4 Ghz
    XFX 8800 GT
    XFX 680i LT
    ULTRA 600w
    2GB Corsair memory
    Win XP 32
    250GB seagate HDD

The fan (which is quite noisy) would start up randomly and stop shortly after. It happens at any time, whether the PC is running a game or just sitting on the desktop. The other PSU fan at the back is running normally, and is always on.

    Any ideas on either problem?

Is the PSU a no-name unbranded thing?

So... yea kind of. I know it wasn't a very reliable PSU to begin with. I mean, it has a silver mirror finish!

I guess buying a new PSU is the only solution, but I don't think it's worth it. But that's for my brother to decide.

As for my problem... It's getting quite annoying. I hate any sort of lag, and it really hurts my head, and strains my eyes. Every time I take a corner quickly I brace for frame rate studders. That's why I envy anyone with a quad core +.

I guess I should ask for CPU suggestions, even though I won't be upgrading for a while. What's the deal with these "i7's?" Surely they are driving the quad-core prices down?

Unless you want to destroy his PC, a new PSU is definitely worth it.

Well if you really wanted to your could find a fan of the same size and tape the wires together, but it would probably be much easier to just get a new PSU.

On problem 1 - Update punkbuster manually and if that does not work, turn off any antivirus/spyware program you have and try it then.

You have plenty of hard drive space. You can download utilities for your specific drive and run a test on them if you want to be sure.
