Is GTX 285 worth overclocking for Crysis?

    Hi,

The thread's title pretty much says it all. Is it worth it? Have you guys seen noticeable differences by overclocking to lets stay SSC edition clocks. I play at 1920x1080 and using CCC config file (Lvl 4) with 2x AA.

    My pc specs:
    Dell XPS 730x
    i7 920 2.66ghz
6gb ram (only 3gb detected in vista 32 bit)
    750gb hd
    gtx 285

You could potentially get an FPS increase, but the best way to get better performance would be to overclock your CPU instead, the i7 processors overclock very well.

Overclocking your graphics card usually only gives a minor performance increase, but it depends on what is the bottleneck for your system.

Yes, a GPU overclock would give you an FPS boost, but it's marginal, you're not going to think "wow, this is amazing!". GTX285's tend not to have a massive headroom due to heat constraints and the use of GDDR3. If you do decide to overclock it, focus on the shader clock, that's where the magic happens.

Like others said, a CPU overclock would help for sure, however, I see the word Dell which in tech talk directly translates to "locked BIOS".

Thanks for the responses guys. I am not sure about overclocking the cpu because it can handle anything that you throw at it so.......would it make a huge difference because usually overclocking cpu doesnt really make a difference in games.

Secondly, the bios is fully unlocked, its a XPS 730x not the lower end kind.

So lets say that i end up overclocking it, whats the best way of doing it? Through bios or software?
I think that I'll just overclock the shader memory as he said back there for the graphics card. I also checked the benchmarks for 285 SSC and the difference was like 4 fps ave. from reg. 285 at the same settings.

So what do you guys think after knowing all this info that I just gave? :)

Overclocking the CPU will make more of an improvement in Crysis than overclocking the graphics I believe. It's a pretty physics heavy game, so you should notice a difference. I doubt it's bottlenecking the CPU though.

I just overclocked the i7 920 to 3.0ghz. I dont know if I saw any improvement. Also, I disabled the physx in nvidia control panel and decided to use cpu for physics. Good decision? Because I wanted to lower the load on the gfx card. What do you guys think?

Changing physics to CPU is a really bad option. The PhysX of the GPU far, far outweighs what the CPU can do.

That is what i thought. Because I even saw the fps drop to like 7 and usually it never dropped under 23 at most stuff happening.

I think that I'll overclock the gpu a little in terms of shader memory or maybe to the SSC edition values. Its not gonna blow up so I'll be fine....

So, I overclocked and the results were astonishing compared to stock fps. I'm only going to mention the results for the settings that I play at. Here are the results:

For some reason with OC, the min dips lower than the stock. So, if you look at the increased fps max for OC and the decreased fps for stock, overclocking doesnt really make a difference.

Here are some more benchmarks. Look at the ave. fps for 1680x1050 and 1920x1080. Absolutely no difference.

                        Run #1- DX10 1680x1050 AA=2x, 32 bit test, Quality: High ~~ Overall Average FPS: 38.15
                        Run #2- DX10 1920x1080 AA=2x, 32 bit test, Quality: High ~~ Overall Average FPS: 38.08

                        Weird?

Well I overclocked using EVGA Precision. Overclocking a pc component usually results in higher performance because everything is running a bit quicker than the stock speeds. In my case, it didnt really make a difference so I'm guessing that overclocking really isnt worth it. I have a stock gtx 285 and cranked it up to the SSC edition values and they didnt make a difference. With the overclocked settings, I saw that the minimum fps dipped lower than the stock. On the other hand, the maximum was higher than the stock so overall it kinda didnt make a huge difference.

The one thing that I'm glad about it that changing the resolution from 1680x1050 to 1920x1080 hardly affected the fps. The results posted above are from the 3rd run using the Crysis benchmarking tool.

Overclocking is the process of pushing parts to faster speeds than they were originally sold out, sometimes using extra voltage to maintain stability.
