Vista 64 bit 4 GB Ram/Pagefile

Trying to free my Vista up,I have 4 GB ram 64 bit vista.My ram usage is always 50-70% and never much lower than 50%:shakehead:

I have about 4-6 GB pagefile atm,but that much of my ram taken up isnt good.I do have alot on my computa but still.

It is known vista chews up ram with this virtual stuff but is there any tricks,advice or pagefile majic settings to help me get lower ram usage.

I have tried 1 GB page file and it was a bit better but not much.

Any advice is much appreciated:salute:

I wouldn't worry about memory usage in Vista, why have the ram if nothing is being done with it tbh

As soon as you need the ram for other things it is given to you, its one thing Vista excels at is memory/resource management

the reasons why ram usage is high is because of superfetch, where Vista loads commonly used programs into memory in an attempt to predict what you are going to open and thus reduce load times

I wouldn't worry about it, just don't get rid of the page file totally because some software will demand you have one; otherwise I typically leave my page file on default or make it slightly larger; its not the end of the world if the PC needs to use the page file imo

afaik, from everything I've read its best to set pagefile size 1.5-2x your ram amount. I have mine set to 8192. I'm running vista x64, and with 64 processes running (6 apps open), my ram is at 38 used. but depending on what you are running, it could just be using more ram, which isnt a bad thing really. Its there to use.

I have 8 GBs of RAM and Windows has my page file set to 8488Mb. My regular usage for RAM is 2.22GBs during normal usage and 800Mbs to 1.7GBs Idle. You can turn off the superfetch and other memory users if you like. Check your processes for all users and disable anything you really don't need running using msconfig.

how do you turn of superfetch?in msconfig?

Its 50% at idle:crycourse a few things in taskbar ect)

But when i load something big like arma 2 or total war its like 85%+ to 99%

I also had a issue in empire total war that sucked up all my memory and wouldnt give me clean memory but that most likely the game coding.

I might try a larger pagefile:|: eg 8 GB +

Turning off superfetch would be like turning off anti-lock brakes on your car. Why would you want to?

Open a command prompt and type the following:
services.msc
msconfig

Under services disable and stop anything you don't need running.
In Msconfig disable any startup items you don't need running.

Turning off superfetch would be like turning off anti-lock brakes on your car. Why would you want to?

Because im not worried about loading times buy having everything in memory and would rather have free memory.eg. antilock brakes might be good for a volvo and safety but if you want to race it the brakes wont be resposive and nurfed.

anyway lol...I do agree superfetch is vistas heart and it cant be turned off

I have increased my pagefile and it has helped im now at 39%.that is untill my memory slowly fills up again

The issue you encountered with empire total war was probably the old memory addressing issue, whereby the game wanted to use more than 2gb of memory but wasn't coded to

that problem got fixed though

Which is rather silly, because having free memory does absolutely nothing for your system what-so-ever.

It can easily be turned off, but it's an unwise move unless your system has 512mb of memory or less.

Open task manager and go to the performance tab. Look in the Physical Memory box and see how much of your memory is free, and how much is Cached. This can help us determine if this is simply superfetch, or if you have a memory leak somewhere.

Also if you are finding out you don't have enough memory to allocate to certain services or programs and Superfetch is not releasing memory fast enough you can disable Superfetch from services. Which can be the case for high memory applications or low memory systems.
