Prepping for Win 7

So, I have a 775 Socket motherboard with 2gb of RAM. I know I need more RAM, especially before I upgrade to 7, but the RAM I have now would not be what I would put in an i7 machine and I might want to upgrade soonish, so here is my question:

Should I just get a couple more sticks of RAM and live with my core 2 duo for a good while longer or should I pull the trigger and do new mobo, core i7, and RAM purchase?

I was thinking either http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115202 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115211 for CPUs, but would it be better to wait until after i5's come out?

Win7 is using pretty low resources on my 2 systems I am running the RC1 on.

However, definitely get the i7 920. If you want more speed just overclock it a little bit. You don't need to go a long ways, just a little bit can make all the difference.

Also if you do wish to upgrade, before you order a new CPU / Motherboard / RAM. Have a look over at Microcenter. They have some pretty hot deals from time to time, about a week ago they were selling the i7 920's for 199.99

id say get a couple more gbs of RAM, its dirt cheap now so you shouldnt have trouble finding a nice pair, by the time u go with the i7 the parts should come way down.

Win7 runs perfectly fine with 2gbs but it wouldn't hurt to get more.

just look at my specs and this thing runs better and faster than XP

I really should have just gotten 4gb to begin with.

^^ definitely, i have the same ones, running 8 gbs with my E8400 at 4ghz and its just fine, go for it.

edit...i'm personally holding off on future processor/mobo upgrades until something really, really substantial over an overclocked C2D comes out. as for memory, i wouldn't even think of upgrading to DDR3 for "performance" reasons. there just aren't any.

Get the i7 920. Its the base i7 processor, but its fast. Its good enough to play call of duty 4 with 600FPS highest settings with a Radeon 4890 in windows 7. I wouldn't just keep your current rig. I'd upgrade now imo.

DDR2 is dirt cheap. Stick with your C2D system (I'm doing the same).

There's no real reason for him to upgrade. All of the games currently out will run great on his current hardware. Being able to run games at 600 frames per second is nice, but certainly not a must, and with no games that are so demanding his PC can't run them, upgrading his PC won't accomplish much.

I would hope so, since it doesn't take much to be faster than Windows XP. In fact, the only reasonably modern OS that isn't faster than XP would be....well, XP. Solaris/OpenSolaris, OS X, Windows Vista, FreeBSD and derivative distros, and most Linux distros (The ones that don't hold your hand everywhere you go) are all a noticeable bit faster than Windows XP. And really, they should be, since Windows XP is going on 8 years old. I see no reason why Windows 7 shouldn't be faster than XP.

Ok, so I just installed this RAM and it made my computer not boot. It works fine if I take them back out. Que?

How many sticks did you buy?
When i built my computer one of my sticks of ram was causing a short or something on the motherboard, so try each stick separately, or if its 1 stick, send it back if you can.

The problem you're experiencing may be from a motherboard limitation. Most motherboards may be able to run four modules at a time, but not at high speeds. You may have to slow your memory down and/or increase your northbridge voltage slightly to get all four modules running. Aww scratch that. I just tried them individually per Feckwit and it didn't work.
