Audio for Home Theater with no Reciever

Is it possible to hook up a small 2.1 system with no receiver? I would like to add some nice boost to the audio on the 32" Samsung in my bedroom however would rather not spend $150 on a receiver. A friend said there are some 2.1 systems out there that can do this, but I have been unable to find any.

erm, in spite of the mod's best intent...i've no idea what you're starting with or where you want to go.

existing pc with at least 2.1 ports and an interface w/your AV source might do the trick, with a bit of tinkering and no more money out of pocket, but idk if that's the question....
