Not really, no. THis is because the motherboards are customs made and fitted per case. There may be some options, but in general, no.

No, but if you want a custom laptop go to Sager.com they do awesome laptops at good prices.

Technically, there is no difficulty that an industrial standard can be established for standard laptop parts. However, big players in the market don't want it. They have no incentive to push for laptop standards. They want propriety parts for every single model, so that the consumers have no choice but upgrade the whole system. I guess that certain standards can be enacted among smaller players in the market. AMD would be pleased if they can take hold of any market share, and so will be NVIDIA and VIA.

There are still some laptop barebones out there. It won't be too bad if laptop CPUs don't cost that much.

its possible, but there doesn't seem to be a big cost savings like there is with desktops.
