Need a sat-nav

I'm looking for a sat-nav device for my car. I have never owned one before and would put my budget at £150 max. I need something that can or has European road coverage as i'll be using it when driving in France.

Has anyone got any good recommendations for me?

I've got a TomTom One Classic, was just under £100 for the UK & Irish maps, so probably a bit more for the whole of europe. It's a good little unit, and it is small so it doesn't swallow your whole windscreen.

Plus you can download for free the location of all speed cameras in the UK, which is useful when driving in places you've never been before

I stay with maps and compass. You can't beat the old fashion way under any circumstances. One of my colleague has his car window broken by a prick and has his GPS stolen.

Learn some French. Those people don't feel like to speak English.

Yea, I have a map, but i'll driving so the girlfriend is navigating (r'uh r'oh). I want a GPS anyway, seem so useful.

check out the Garmin Nuvi line they are pretty nice. I used one on a trip and it was great. real fast calculations, simple to use. The base models (200 series) are nice and inexpensive. As the model numbers go up they add features like trip planning, sd card photo viewing, fm radio, sat radio, mp3, fm transmit to your stereo.
I prefer the "W" versions which are widescreen.

Actually, neither is preferable. The poles are reversing (http://www.nasa.gov/vision/earth/loo...eticfield.html), causing rapid shifts in magnetic declination over time and distance, and the GPS system will fail within the next two years (http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/19/g...accounting-of/).

So just be a man and go for it.

x3. I have a Garming 250w. I wont say that it have never failed me, roads change etc. But it is tons better than those no-name devices I had before.

Plus Garmin has now launched a service where you for a one-time fee get free updates to the map for the lifetime of the device. Its $140 for the European maps (nüMaps Lifetime™ Europe).
Disclaimer: I haven't actually tried that service myself yet.
