iv not specced up for a while but is DDR2 about the same as DDR3? If not then screw the DDR3 option stick with 4GB DDR2 and use a 780 or 790 chipset. The typical DDR3 latencies kinda make it pointless below 1.8-2GHz especially when you consider price (assuming i havent missed something) and considering the differenve between DDR2 and DDR3 AMD performance is negligable.

If you wanna go DDR3 then go all out and get i7... even then it only has a specifc purpose. If your gaming then at the moment graphics card seems to be the most important, see if his budget can stretch to allow nice new graphics card aswell as a reasonably up to date CPU, MOBO and RAM.

He can get better deal if he chooses combos. You don't always get what you want, but it's cheaper that way. I'll try if I can find a cheap combination of combos for i7 920 built.

still cost $760 plus $27 shipping.

so ur saying go with ddr2 with that processor? but the price with ddr2 and ddr3 is almost about the same... he has an 9800gt that he wants to use cause he says he plays games at good frames but in other stuff it runs slow

Re: what do u guys think

kudos to Avalanche for the effort but unless its a proper workstation (ie video editing and 3d work) whats the point? Better off with a high end dual core AMD or C2 system and spending the extra on a GPU at the moment.
Better yet, just wait allround we got i5 and DX11 later this yr so...

EDIT: any diff in price with a AMD system makes it pointless... you can only salvage the ram itself from an AM3 system in the future and as i said the latencies make it pointless. 9800GT... hes spendin his money on the wrong part tbh get a new allround setup that will keep him goin till we are in next gen graphics or just save and wait.

well could u put some specs up for a quad core and a new graphics card for $700? (he needs everything and wants room for improvement later on)

Well, you want to put a graphics card in. Then this is probably not the cheapest I can find, but you may find better deal if you investigate deeper. Price and deals are subject to change on the daily basis.

That kind of thing probably makes a lot more sense for him

Squeezd a triple core into it, slightly over budget but its a nice build
