You won't get a virus from saving an image to the hard drive, unless they used a data url to embed what your browser THINKS is an image into the source code, when it's actually malicious code.

However, just visiting the site can run some bad scripts which you might not necessarily want running on your PC.

It's certainly an image because i used it in a game. Also did multiple virus scans and they all came out clean.

They have something that does the like. There was a thing going around that when you saved an image on your computer, it installed a sort of bot which automatically started spamming 4chan with the same picture. So, somehow they can.

I just assume they use extra data in the picture to hide code.

Yes, but there was a sort of trick to it. You had to save it in Notepad and i had to have a certain filename, since i didn't do that i think i'm not in the danger zone.

A good malware developer tries to be stealthy. It's not out of the question for the script to redirect to an actual image when it's done executing.

I remember the orange box incident on 4chan. Someone posted one of the scripted images with the message beside it being, Save as 29034.js (i think it was .js or something) and some people were stupid enough too. So then the image just copied itself and uploaded itself constantly to 4chan threads...
