Just popped up today, first time I ever got it, is this legit?

Yes it's legit, and bloody annoying! it is designed to "help users identify if they have been the victim of software piracy" (ie: annoy pirate users) and badger then in many ways to get a legit key.

It's main purpose day-to-day is when you want certain MS download/updates - you must have an activated, validated copy of Windows to download/install it.

If you have a dodgy version of Windows don't install.

If you have a good version of Windows install.

Though as with all things there are ways around it.

If you've got a dodgy version of Windoze, you're not worried about it.

If you've got a valid version of Windoze, this is Microsoft's way of telling you all you're base are belong to them, and they're watching you.

Because they love you.

That much.

It hurts.
