What was the old problem with 4x512mb DDR on a AMD64 system?

I remember that there was a problem that occurred when 4x 512mb DDR RAM was used in a AMD64 S939 system, but i don't remember what it was. My friend has some spare DDR 400 ram that he can give me, but i just want to make sure about what the problem was before i do anything. Anyone remember?

On my old system it cut the RAM speed down to 333MHz instead of 400MHz if I populated all of the RAM slots. Is that what you're talking about?

It didn't really hurt much. Having 2GB seemed to outweigh the speed difference.
