Has anyone got this error??

^^^ Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

and it also says that i should put the original cd in and boot from cd and it might fix it

But i dont have the original cd... anyone know what i can do?

I've had this error recently, if you did have the orignal boot cd you could go into recovery console and type "fixmbr" or "fixboot", these solved my issues the first time..But after I got it again and tried those fixes it didn't work..In the end I thought all of my hard drives where dying as I would get this error constantly on all of my hard drives...Turns out I had to update my BIOS and reformat and I have never had the error since...So try updating your BIOS...

I had several other errors as well as the above and overall it was a corrupt BIOS which lead to corrupt Windows boot sectors...After a flash to a newer BIOS everything is well...

Ok so i should try and flash it? but would that even fix the error?

cba to buy vista because win 7 is coming this year plus i got XP free

PS: (i am gonna get the cd from my brother tomorrow so i will hopefully get it fixed...Did you lose any data hellsent?)

Run Data Lifeguard or similar to test your hard drives. That's what gave me that error.

If you try fixmbr or fixboot you shouldnt lose any data...But if that doesnt work I would try flashing the BIOS and you will then have to reformat..so Yes you will lose data that way...

yes I've fixed a couple machines with that error. do a google for "xp hive" and you should find how to fix.
Its not that hard a fix, but requires you boot a XP cd and get into the command console and do a lot of typing and copying files.
It might be possible to do it using a linux boot cd and copy / overwrite the bad files.

basically what happened is you have a corrupt registry file(s). the fix works by overwriting with a good copy of the registry that was created and saved on the first successful install of XP.

once fixed you will have a fresh registry and will have to re-install some of your programs again. there is a way to restore it back to just before it died (after you do the first fix) but that requires even more hacking and moving of some system restore files.

Well i got my pc fixed... all i did was the WD lifeguard tests and it somehow fixed the start up.. although i dont know if it will be ok like this but atleast i got all my data off of it

And also now the USB ports on my mobo dont work... why would that be? anyone know?

the ones built in or the ones that come from the USB headers at the bottom (ie going to the front of your case)? you sure you haven't accidentally disabled them in bios?

I would try re-installing your motherboards chipset drivers. If those aren't installed correctly some ports and stuff on the motherboard wont work in windows. check your device manager for any items marked
