How do I change it so that widow/orphan control is off by default? I'm using Word 2000.

On the View menu, click Normal.
On the View menu, click Footnotes. Select all the footnotes in the note pane.
On the Format menu, click Paragraph.
Click the Line and Page Breaks tab, and click to clear the Widow/Orphan control check box. Click OK.
