A day or two ago my Netgear DG834G (v4) kept loosing it's DSL Carrier/LCP. I tried turning it off, letting it cool for a few minutes then reconnecting as that usually fixes my disconnections, however this ultimately failed. The problem ceased when i updated the router's firmware. All was well.
However since then I've been having trouble with steam games. I can log in, I can see my friends and servers etc. But when I join any server on any game the same thing happens:
All the characters stay still, no "x killed y" messages are generated, yet i can still see the player list. My ping is normal (~43-76) so it's not that. It's not a software firewall getting in the way as I don't use one, and Windows Firewall isn't blocking it.
So I went into the router's port forwarding section and as expected there were no "rules". Now many of you would think that there being no rules, no internet access would be available, but with Netgear I have found that despite this you can just use internet applications and as such in 5 years I have never had to port forward. I tried port forwarding anyway, but it made no difference.
I went into the Router's Log page to see if it indeed was the router's fault and found that the traffic coming from the servers was being blocked because the router thought it was being DoS'd (it has an amateur Denial of Service protection feature). So I told the router to turn off the DoS Protection feature and now everything is working again.
But this bothers me, how come I have to turn off this security feature. In previous firmware and my previous Netgear router I did not have to do this. Could it be a firmware fault?
