Help! Ext HDD fell and now gives me funny noises

    hey everyone

I need some help, my stupid brother tripped over my hard drive wire and it fell, wasn't very high too it was at knee length. I cant believe how stupid he is because he basically lives in my room with the comp and PS3 being in there so he knows where ever wire and extension is.

Anways on topic i hooked the hard drive back in and now its giving me some funny noise like a warning sound and then stop, it sounds as if the disc inside is spinning and scratching at the same time. What can i do is this going to be reparable at all?

You won't be able to repair the drive, if it's physically damaged. I'd be checking the warranty, if I were you.

Cant find the warranty, as well as i think that the internal components of the hard drive might have fallen off or are loose. I took it to a PC workshop today hopefully i will get an answer by tomorrow

        Is it actually working?

Is there a fan in the HD enclosure?

i think we should set up an Eagle help sticky xD you donthave the best of luck with you computer fella my heart goes out to u :p

If it doesnt turn out to be a cooling fan or something like that then im afraid your pretty much out of luck. You can get them repaired but its very very expensive as it requires a clean static free workshop. My lecturer told me of a time he managed to recover most of the contents of a students hard drive by transferring the actual disk into a donor drive but it would ruin both drives and the effort it would take is hardly worth it unless the data is vital.... even then it might not work.

Tell your bro to smash his piggy bank :p

drive noise = backup and buy new if you can't obtain warranty service.

            sorry...

There's a rule to maintaining HDDs: if it grinds, it's done. There are some standardized HDD tests on the (internal drive) manufacturers' websites, I think, so run those to make sure there aren't any errors; if you report the errors to customer support during your drive's warranty period, they immediately authorize a replacement to be sent.

Now if other companies had such quick responses...

                  ^ thanks dude.

The techsop i went to could not fix it, the comps dont detect it. I found the warrant but its expired. I bought a new My Book 1TB to replace my fallen and beloved IOmega.

And clean up your cables and stop blaming your brother for your laziness.

You blame your brother when you get caught with hax, not when they trip over your mess.

They have just recieved about 10 of the 1TB Mybooks in the editting suite at uni to use as scratch disks/temp storage so i would guess its a pretty good call there :)

My 320MB one recently broke after a year which was a bit dissapointing but it took a bit of a beating with being transported about a lot so its my own fault. Hard drive inside it is still ok though so i havent lost a great deal.
