could someone tell me why exactly you would chose 1 company over another? how are the chips that they put out different from one another? is there something that makes one superior to the other?

This thread is guaranteed to turn into a flame war within the next 10 posts. Just be warned. I generally do not even respond in these kind of threads due to that reason.
To be honest, I would call you crazy to go with AMD at this current time. Intel holds the largest market share for a reason, because they are the top performing chip for your money.
Remember, that is at this current time (the last 2-3 years or so) Intel has held the top spot in performance and in Price/Performance Ratio in the Consumer Level chip market.
That is my educated opinion based on PC building for around 7 years now.
For all that are guaranteed to post after me flaming my opinion, remember everyone has their own opinion, I am not an Intel Fan Boy, this is my opinion.

Yeah, AMD used to own because of where it was placed.. There was quicker access to it or what-not.

For gaming AMD are better for budget systems and Intel are better for performance, but you pay more.
If you're just using the computer for general purpose activities like the internet, music, microsoft office, etc. then I highly doubt you'd see a difference between an Intel system and an AMD system.Comment

There's no difference. AMD is basically like the off-brand version of Intel's CPUs. Which is better basically varies from generation to generation. I honestly would just purchase whichever one has the best offerings currently. At this point in time that would probably be Intel.Comment

In fact, the only real contribution AMD has made to the current architecture is towards the x86-64 portion of it. AMD made contributions to 64-bit computing in the home x86 environment, but without Intel's IA-32 architecture and instruction sets, AMD would not be in the position it currently is in.Comment
