    speaking of cpu speed

with a c2d cpu what do you actually think would be the highest speed you'd really need to run it at before you dont see any tangible results such as for first person shooters? im wondering if i would be better off just running at 3.6Ghz because that would work with my RAM speed a little better.

    Re: speaking of cpu speed

Well, anything above about 2.5GHz is generally fine for most FPS games.

im not talking about 'fine' im talking about as good as possible, there is a difference. im just wondering if most of the games out are even able to take advantage of X amount of processing speed.

Well I assume some CPU heavy games like GTA4 might, but how much are we talking here really? 10-15 fps? I would say it depends more on other parts of your rig in most games to get a tangible difference, rather than pumping out 0.5 more GHZ and expecting a huge result.

          Only reasons i overclocked was
          1. Release the bottleneck on my GPU
          2. For the fun of doing it
          3. See how high i could get

I would say the differences between 3.6 and 4Ghz in games will be negligible but the best way for you to check it run benchmarks yourself!

I overclock for fun, not for tangible results :p

Well the point is that most FPS games are GPU bound rather than CPU bound.

if you are mainly performance oriented as is not caring about having high graphics and simply looking for improving your hit registry and max frames per second when gaming online your cpu does alot of the work.
