It's not Linux that's difficult to learn. Linux can be learned without pulling hairs.

It's starting out with a distribution like Gentoo without having any prior Linux knowledge that's a bad idea, since Gentoo is designed for experienced users who know their way around Linux very well already. There are other distros more tailored to inexperienced users.

While that is true, I started with Debian and had no problems getting acquainted with it. Linux for nubs = Ubuntu or maybe even Lindows. Haha.

Ah Gentoo I remember using this when I wanted things to move lighting fast, only thing was some of my friends wanted to learn and well you don't start with Gentoo :), so I had them watch me using the power of the terminal as it is very fast at compiling just about anything :).

my $.02 would be to stick with xp until win 7 comes out. it may very well turn be turn out to be worth the money. there just wasn't enough to vista to justify opening *my* billfold, with a $34 volume licensed copy (unlimited reinstalls, never phones the Redmond mothership) of xp in hand.

the only reason vista would give you lower fps is if you didnt have enough RAM to run vista and your games well at the same time.

theres nothing about vista that simply gives you bad fps

just get 4GB of good RAM and you wont have to worry about any of that

good FPS in BF2142 is highly dependent on the speed of your processor.

"We had a poll running for some time asking about the release date of the Windows 7 operating system. Options were available from the first quarter of 2009 to 2011. Almost 30000 users have cast their vote on the release date, here are the results:
Most voters think that Windows 7 will either be released in the fourth quarter of 2009 or 2011. Both of these options received 18% of the votes. After that are the first quarter of 2010 with 16% of all votes followed by the first quarter of 2009 with 12%, the third quarter of 2009 with 11% and the second quarter of 2009 with 7% if all votes.
The majority of users (48%) believes that Windows 7 will be released in 2009."

                Taken from: http://windows7news.com/tag/windows-7-release-date/

                Also came across this:

"Depending on the website that you visit you find release dates for Windows 7 that range from the second quarter of 2009 to the fourth quarter of 2010. That’s more than 18 months of difference."

I would define that as consistent 60 or more FPS.

Also, I took the middle road here.
