Windows XP or Vista

Hey guys, Iam posting this thread here because I have a bootlegged windows XP and after 4 years maybe its time for me to get at least a windows that let me download wXP service pack2. And iam getting a new Hard drive, Also iam posting this here cuz I use my CPU mostly for gaming ( BF2142 FTW )

I heard the Vista was running games on a lower FPS so as a FPS freak as iam I cant accept that.

Any pros and cons about vista? seriously I feel more Familiar with XP and iam planning to get a 64 bits version.

I also heard that you could upgrade a version or vista 32bits from a 64bits on microsoft web site, If its true can you do it with a 32bits Windows XP?

You can't swap between 32bit and 64bit. You buy either version, they can not be changed at a later date.

With that in mind, you should purchase (yes, that means legally) Windows Vista X64. It is a lot more stable than XP due to the way drivers work and also, recent games will run quicker.

You could always wait a couple months until Windows 7, I think it's due out this summer or this fall at the latest.

i have vista 32bit, with 8300GS piece of sh*t..
and i can get constant 125fps on CoD4 on most maps, so i'm thinking that is u are fpa mad u will probs have a good GFX card.

125 FPS thats pretty good. On BF2142 I always get near 50-60..
but thats interesting, I heard vista 64bit sucked more juice then the 32. Yeah well I got a 8600GT right now, prolly aiming for a 9800gtx. Anyways I think I will buy vista, still got to April to make up my mind, due that iam moving a new appartment.

theres gonna be a new windows? lol...

I'm dualbooting Vista x64 and Ubuntu x64, and I haven't had a problem with either of them. Vista is a resource hog by itself though, but Vista also equals DX10.

@Wardog. There's no point in getting a 9800GTX, just go with something in the GTS/X 200 series. 9800s are just like rebranded 8800GTXs.

if your thinking of vista, then just wait for windows7, or download and install windows 7 beta now and see how it runs.

and as far as xp service packs. you can download them without using windows update. just go on microsofts website and download xp-sp3 network install.

I had some problems with the Windows 7 beta. However, that being said it is afterall just a "beta" lol. I did like the "Pins" feature of the OS however. Reminds me of MAC OS.

I will stick to Vista for now until Windows 7 matures a little bit more.

Windows Vista isn't a 'resource hog'. What most users perceive as Vista being a 'resource hog' is actually Vista's aggressive memory management in action. Vista has a service called Superfetch, which caches programs, files and libraries into free memory. Since your memory is a lot faster than your hard disk, loading the file from your memory is a lot faster than fetching it from your drive. When your memory is needed for something else, Superfetch will release that memory. Windows XP did something similar, but on a much smaller scale, called Prefetch, and like Vista, Windows XP was initially ridiculed and called a 'resource hog'. What's ironic is that all the people who called Windows XP a resource hog now swear by it, and are calling Windows Vista the 'resource hog'.

Oh. I never called XP a resource hog. Vista lagged my system even with 4GB of quality DDR2 memory. Even with Prefetch, if you didn't clear it once in a while, your system slowed to a crawl. Use of memory is a smart move, but when you're loading up games that consume large chunks of memory, things don't go very well.

It's never been a problem for me, even on a modest 2 gigs of DDR2-667.

Microsoft's teams of Software Engineers aren't stupid. They know enough about operating system design to not implement a feature that would cause problems for mainstream users like gamers.
