    WD Support..

How let down I am by them..

So I buy two new, OEM drives from eBuyer a week or so back, WD Green Power ones, shiny Green, a 1TB and 640GB one. I go to register them, the 640GB one has warranty fine no issues, the 1TB is a whole different story.

It shows up as having "No Limited Warranty".

So lost, I send a support ticket to them, get a dumb reply ignoring my question, joys of idot support people. So once again I reply asking the question "Why does my 640GB OEM drive have warranty yet my 1TB does not".

So here comes another dumb reply, "OEM drives do not come with warranty" - Huh? Did you read what I asked? So why does my other OEM drive have warranty, clearly ignoring what I asked I was getting pissed at this point, so I go ahead and ring the US support line (I have called the EU support line before, hence I'm calling the US one this time).

So I have a nice convo with Alberto I think his name was, on the phone with him for 20mins (Thank you SIP phones.) and he confirmed to me that it has warranty until 2011 and to email WD support again as a new ticket with Proof of Purchase and it will all get sorted out. heh if only life was so easy.

After around 5 or so emails with some support person I still don't have warranty and they are now saying my 640GB Green Drive is a retail drive even tho I got it in the nice anti static bag only, that's retail?!

I think I will call up the US support again and try to talk to the same person I did a week or so ago, but wanted your thoughts on this?

I would be confused by that too if that's exactly what you asked.

Other than that I have no clue what you should do other than to just keep pestering them until they finally give you a warranty.

Are the disks actually broken are you trying to simply register them? Also, talk to Ebuyer, they'll have more warranty info.

Just trying to register for if and when the time comes they die, I already asked eBuyer, they have a year where as WD has three.

Im surprised you have any warranty by WD at all with OEM equipment. Usually OEM is only covered by the seller and not manufacturer.

Maybe the one with warranty was an open box return and they labelled it as OEM.

I have 5 WD OEM drives of various sizes. All carried the standard 3 yr warranty. Only had to replace the 10k raptor once

              Re: WD Support..

iv been pretty lucky with hard drives in that only one has ever died but it gave me plenty of waring beforehand that it was going (ie very bad noises and slow ) so i managed to back everything before it literally went up in smoke.

That was an IBM drive and seeing that go whilst the WD ones still go on strong in other machines has given me a certain brand loyalty to them... although the green ones are the 5400rpm ones right? sod that tbh id go for the seagate if i was to get a new one

I did recently have a WD external fail on me but thankfully it turned out to be the controller electorincs and not the drive so im just gunna buy a new enclosure for it.
