Catastrophic Water Cooling Failure

My arrogance of being one of the people with the Knack finally caught up with me. Previously, I tried to cut corner and used harder but not up to specified 2" tubes as my connection from the pump to 3/8 barb converter. Well, apparently, the rubber hose doesn't like diluted Listerine very much, and became opaque and hardened itself over several months. That resulted in breakage of connection from the pump, hence stopped water flow. The CPU then cooks the water until it can take no more. :cry: My poor CPU. The computer then shut itself down while playing "Bomberpilot" (a German metal song from a band I'm not familiar with). I am currently out of fund and don't have time to fix it, so I use stock HSF as interim solution before the summer comes.

Any suggestion?

My only suggestion would be to learn from this experience and use Water/Coolant from a reputable manufacturer. I have never heard of using Listerine, and just the thought of it makes me shake my head.

I seem to remember having an argument with you not too long ago about how DIY kits are better and cheaper than loops made with off the shelf components.

I guess, until you can afford a new kit, stick with a high end air cooler. What components broke in the end, just the tubing, or did your CPU and motherboard get it?

Also, I always tend to use official coolants, mainly Feser. They are tried and tested and i'll never use anything else, especially my own concoctions! The most i would ever use would be a few drops of white vinegar in deionised water to clean the tubes and rad.

Well, I tried to cut corners as much as possible. Listerine was chosen because it's off my shelf (i.e. $15 bottle of coolant vs $4 bottle of Listerine). It actually works pretty well for algae suppression if you can stand the smell initially. The ingredient are almost the same. I used two different tubings. The 3/8 are Vinyl and 1/2 failed ones are PVC. I'll be looking for Tygon now for its flexibility and resistiveness, though pricey.

CPU and motherboards are fine, despite overheating, since the failure occurs in the reservoir bottle. The Vinyl part of the loop holds well. The shutdown caused some system file corruption and it was restored to the status of a few days ago. I'll be traveling in a short while and am currently out of available funding. I'll try to fix it once I come back.

Good luck to you when you get back. Just order actual water cooling parts/tubings.

Cutting corners with electronics is never a good idea. :thumbsup:

100% agree. Tubing is so much cheaper then a Component. Sorry to hear of you misfortune. I fried my PSU recently and I have been bumbed for 2 weeks with no gaming rig :)
