I am about to smash my ext hdd with a hammer!

Hi everyone,

Well i am really pissed as i have media files (movies) to move from my computer hard drive into my ext hdd. Whenever i move the files they would complete to 90% or less then i would get PATH TOO DEEP, i replied WTF!? so please tech gurus of TGN help me!

What format is the hard drive in?

If it's FAT32 either the file is too big, or you've trying to move the file to a place where there are too many folders within folders.

Turn off Windows Firewall if you have it on and make sure the disk is NTFS. Could also be that the end and start point file address is too long

Both my ext HDD and internal are NTFS.

Its a limitation in the character format in Windows. With the long filenames available and counting the name of folders, the path ends up being "too deep". The only fix I have ever had work was by shrinking the file path.

I got SP3 i am not sure if thats the problem as it is the latest SP for XP. I did not get much out of these fixes too because i am a complete noob. What i will do is try to to what you did Crunch "The only fix I have ever had work was by shrinking the file path." just as soon as you tell me how you did that? :p

you can booth your drive with software called SwissKnife, very handy and just to be sure your drive is NTSF, it still looks like its working on FAT32 (where you have a data limit transfer of 2,81 GB)

You just shrink down the file names or folders.

For example;

Your path now: F:\folder1\folder2\folder3\movies\movie1.wdm
\movie2.wdm
\movie3.wdm

Change it to: F:\folder1\movies\movie1.wdm

Or if your movie names or song names are REALLY LONG, like "harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban.wdm", change them to something small like "hpazkaban.wdm".

Okay, mysteriously it works, i cut the movie folders then pasted them on my desktop then cut them again and past them on my ext and voila it worked lol :p

That would be because instead of being inside of a long list of folders it was just in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Desktop.

Yep, the path was cut down before the transfer
