Help playing old game

After trying HAWX and hating it, I wanted to try a real air combat game lol. Jane's USNF 97, first one I played, I've also played Jane's F15 but I need a joystick for that. So two questions:

How can I get USNF 97 working again? It won't start in XP in Windows 95 compatibility mode and I've tried using a DOS emulator but it says it can't be executed in DOS or something like that. It's a pretty old game, the system requirements are Pentium 90 MHz , 16mb of RAM , 4X CD-ROM drive , 25MB of hard drive space , DirectX-compatible sound & video card , Windows 95.

And is there any program that will let me map keyboard keys to joystick functions. Ex: throttle increase/decrease, arrow keys to control a plane BF2 style.

have you tried just using a dos 6.x boot disk?

Yeah. Try that or use something like Dosbox on Linux. If all else fails, try a newer Jane's game. I personally play Jane's F/A-18 sim.

have you tried just using a dos 6.x boot disk?

Don't really know how to do that, and Dosbox told me it wasn't executable in DOS.

Remember the manual that came with USNF 97? It was an entire guide on air combat tactics and landing and all that. You just don't see manuals like that anymore.

and I could never land properly so I just glided down to the carrier/runway with my engines idle and with brakes and flaps.

You could try Windows 95 or Windows 98 in a virtual machine. That'd probably be your best bet, if you have a Windows 98 or 95 disk somewhere.

I'll have to look, I got a Jane's pack as a gift with USNF 97 the F-15 SIM and a WWII one, and I think one more, don't remember which, I was very little when I got it, say 6 or 7, I used to love flight sims. I just can't find any good ones anymore

Hi,

Sorry to join this thread so late.

I managed to make USNF (the 1995 version) run on DosBox under Ubuntu 8.10.
It works fine, but the DosBox key combinations interfere with the key combinations that are used in USNF.
And DosBox does not support the "Insert" and "Delete" keys, which are used to release Chaffs and Flares in USNF.

But I think there are plans to implement the Insert and Delete keys in DosBox. The question is when?

I got the game working, but it plays too fast. I'm using DosBox and D-Fend Reloaded. Is there any way to make the game run at proper speed?

Part 7: Slow DOWN your computer

If the game runs too fast, here's what to do:

# Find the game's executable file (the file you run, usually {somename}.exe) using Windows Explorer. Right click on the file, and choose "Properties".
# Click the "Program" tab. Click the "Advanced" button.
# Check the "Comaptible Timer Emulation" box. Click "OK", then "Apply", then "OK" again. See if that fixes the games speed.
If that doesn't fix the problem:
# A utility called "Moslo" can help solve this problem. Read the FAQ on Moslo here: DOSGAMES.com FAQ #3: Moslo.

also, if you can get an old copy of MS-Dos 6.1 (think that's right, but earlier ones might work), it might solve a lot of problems. then again, xp or linux should do a completely adequate job of emulating a dos environment...

Try installing a Windows 95 virtual machine and see if that gets you anywhere. A windows 95 emulator like DOSbox would be great, but I don't think one exists...

Dosbox does have the option to emulate Windows. USNF 97 works but it runs too fast.

it's because dosbox is running in "turbo mode". My neighbor had a Tandy when I was growing up that had a button on it that specifically would change the speed his machine ran at. I really don't think it was called turbo by anyone other than Tandy though....
