Mates PC dying everytime he plays

    Hi everyone!

My friend's PC dies off and he is forced to manually restart his PC to get it to work again, we figure it might be his GFX. Specs below:

    CPU E8400 No OC

    GFX 9800GTX 512MB no OC

    PSU Hyper 580W

Case Bosse Galaxy III Mid Tower w/window.

    2GB RAM

Personally i think the case might be the main problem to the heat issues.

The shutdown occurs when he is playing Oblivion, Prince of Persia (sands of time), Fallout 3. He would be playing for a random amount of time then the system would freeze and we have to restart it.

I'd run stability tests on the CPU, RAM and GPU... Maybe the GPU is overheating? Use rivatuner to monitor the temps and ATI tool to scan for artifacts.

I will recommend him the stability tests, but i definitely think its the GPU overheating.

Use a program such as Rivatuner to monitor the GPU temps then run a stress program like ATItool to Furmark. It shouldn't really exceed 90c

When I had this, it was because my processor died.

Orthos does the same thing for your CPU. Use it with Realtemp or Coretemp, make sure you have the right TjMax though. I think under 60C should be safe for the proc.

                    Orthos/Prime95 is for CPU

ATItool (0.27 beta4)/Furmark is for GPU.

Ok the stability option could not be found on Nvidia's CP, we found that the temps of both cores of the CPU goes well over 60 into the 70s while on load and stays on 60 while idle. Same goes to the GFX any ideas guys i am guessing dust bunnies.

CPU shouldn't be anywhere near 60c idle, more like 30c-40c and probably 60c-70c on load.

If it's that sort of temps, you have the CPU HSF mounted incorrectly. The graphics card is fine up to 90c. But, like i said, download furmark and monitor the card temps for 10 minutes.

Whats his motherboard? a lot of the pre P4* motherboards stated they could handle 45nm CPUs however once they where released and tested there was a lot of problems with the temp sensors. Some manufacturers fixed this with bios updates but some simply couldnt do it.

Check the mobo model then google see if its one of the problematic ones then see if a bios update solves it.

Mkay, the mobo is an MSI P35 neo.
