Need help, i busted my mates internet ? :s

Hey guys i have tryed www.pchelpforum.com but those guys dont seem to know a whole lot so i thought id try here, my mates mum is kinda pissed off at me for breakin the internet a it been down the last few days.. im just gona copy and paste my orginal post into here cuz it quite long..if you guys could help i would be reallly happy..

Hey guys today i was trying to set my mates ps3 wirelessly up to his router..I was in the router settings (eircom) and i went to wireless and then it wasnt set to wep which what mine is and im used to wep so i changed the security type to that and also then i changed the encryption type to 10 charactecrs..I reset the router through the settings but then the pc would not connect to the router since then..

I feel a bit of a **** messing with settings that are not even on my pc but the pc is picking up the signal just it says on vista that the pc settings are not the same as the router settings..But if i could even get back in to my router settings i could change it back to what it was(because i have to go through the browser to acess the router settings or is there away to enter the settings of your router offline?) but all i get now is page can not be displayed..How can i get everything back to what its ment to be? or what should i do? the router is netopia btw

So there it is guys, if you had a few ideas then post them up so i can try them all at once while im at his house cuz everyday that passes im lookin like a bigger moran :s

Did you try a wired connection to the router?

Does the router have Secure-Easy-Setup? If so, check and see if the wireless card also has Secure-Easy-Setup.

umm no but it was orginally wireless. and if that worked wud i not just be t stage one with the wireless again. i was trying to set up a new connection but it dont seem as easy as i thought, theres a few different options but one of them asks you for the ssid code and encryption code...which i dont know ..at one stage i was in the connections window and the connect button was lit up unlike before and all it was looking for was a security code but i hadnt got it so then i fiddled around abit more and then it was unlit again with a red x on the left instead of the 4 green signal bars..umm is there a way to just start a clean connection from scratch (what i was trying to do but it seemd to be allways asking me for codes i hadnt got n stuff :S)

i shouldnt messed with the security settings :S

Yes, it's easy to start a clean connection from scratch. You either use Secure-Easy-Setup, or you connect via wired Ethernet to the router and turn WEP/WPA off.

Right now, the router is encrypting it's packets with WEP encryption. If the wireless card doesn't have the WEP security key, it cannot decrypt the packets, and can't communicate with the router. You need to either remove the WEP encryption setting, or figure out the key. Unless you've tried cracking keys before and know how, it'd probably be easier to just use a wired connection to the router.

My modem has the default WEP key stamped on the bottom of it. Otherwise, reset the router and start over (or just plug it into a computer and fix it; either way).

Just find the little hole on the back of the router and use a paper clip to push the button inside to reset the router.

I tryed the reset thing a few times but it didnt seem to help. Do you mean i can use a wired connection to just fix the wireless and then take it back out again? and it will work the same as before?..

Umm im not too sure what i should do after that how to start up a new connection could you guys tell me how to do it? cuz i hate goin up and trying and then failing :P

do a hard reset on the router. with the router turned on, hold the reset button down for about 30 seconds and then release. that will wipe out all settings in the router and restore it to factory defaults so you can re-program it.

a soft reset is just a quick press and release of the reset button which sometimes fixes problems, but doesn't erase any settings.

Turns out that my mates mum rang up eircom and got the problem fixed :p

Shoot, I was too late.

Im giving my answer anyway :P

What you dont want to do is hard reset the router as it may do other functions that have been setup. By changing the WEP key, the key no longer matches with the PC. If you dont know the key anymore, you should go into the router and assign a new key.

Better yet, set it up for WPA2 and use a pass phrase. It is more secure than WEP and you dont have to have some long line of text, you can make a simple word of 8 characters or more. Then you can go into the Windows wireless setup and find the network, click on it and put in the new key. Done. Then go to your PS3 and do the same.

Im sure the PS3 can do WPA2. My Wii can and I hear the PS3 is just so futuristic scientists use it as a time machine.

yeah thats what it was Wpa-2 but the trouble was that i needed internet access to enter the routher settings :sss..because it works through the browser so i prob would have needed a cable to fix it and then just fix the router but cheers anyway mate :)

If you open the browser and type in the gateway IP address, you can access your router without internet access.

Of course, in your case, you cannot do that wirelessly Maybe you could have through the PS3 browser?

That's odd... my linksys does a hard reset with just a quick push.
