With a Dual-Core CPU in L4D, I've had good results with disabling "Multi-Core Rendering" in the options. My wife was getting a lot of freezes and horrible frame rates. I disabled that one setting and kept everything else to the recommended, which was pretty high with her 8800GTS G92, and it got a lot better. She's using a 4400X2 CPU, but my search results indicated that most dual-core systems would benefit from turning that setting off. The general consensus was that the multi-core rendering setting was designed for Quad-Core and above. Since it runs great on my Q9300, I think they might be right.
It can't hurt, at least. If it makes things worse, turn it back on.
