    Virgin Media

Does anyone else get broadband with them and have nothing but endless problems?
Q4 last year i was getting dreadful pings no matter what i did and after about 5 phone calls and various small fixes that only seemed to work on a temporary basis, they finally admitted their server in my area was at 100% load from 10 in the morning till 2 in the morning. They told me it would be fixed that weekend... but it wasnt so i called again and they told me the repairs had been postponed indefinately and i was like what the hell do you mean indefinately we are paying for internet and getting a quarter of the stated speed near enough all day!
I argued with various levels of manager and such until they agreed to give us a discount/refund (which tbh i dont think we ever got). I came back after christmas to find the internet had *improved* but still was having a LOT of connection problems until today it seems to have finally given up. I called them and said we are having problems getting broadband so he took all my account details.... told me my password was wrong and hung up on me oook so i called them back a few hours later and they finally agreed to send out a technician to check out cable and modem.

    Drives me insane honestly!

No do what I did last time. Ring up and say you want to cancel because of the awful service your getting. We had a technician around that night at bloody 10pm to fix it lol I have to say if there were any other providers offering the speeds I get with Virgin then it wouldnt take me long to swap as their customer support is awful

Only problem I have with them is the throttling.
My 2Mb service gets halved after I've downloaded 500MB in a day, which is a pain for long downloads..

Other than that, they've been pretty sweet.

On the topic of VM, I heard last year that they were planning to upgrade 2Mb customers to 4 (or 10, can't remember). Nothing has come of it yet, but would it be worthwhile hassling Virgin for a free upgrade?

        Re: Virgin Media

I did threaten to cancel the service one of the times we called but they where just like, we are sorry to hear that but we understand :/ erm... ok
Thing is virgin is the only cable provider and we dont pay for a phone line rental at the moment which you would have to if it was ADSL.
This also makes the customer service even worse as their customer support line is like £1 an minute or something insane like that if your not on one of their land lines. I found a sneaky trick around it though so i dont pay anything at all

        @Skaggy
Yeah i heard that they where bumping us up too but no change, tried the whole free upgrade thing but it never got anywhere they just dont seem to like us at all.

Just copy that letter some guy sent to Sir Richard Branson about his in-flight food for one of the Virgin Atlantic flights from Mumbai to London, change the pictures to those of websites/computers/cats and change the words 'flight' to 'broadband' - remove the MUSTARD part and hopefully you'll either get invited to test broadband in new areas OR get ignored...

          Totally worth a try though.

Yeah the throttling is a complete pain in the arse! Its taken me months to get it into the thick skull of my B*T*H house mate that she cant stream films and tv shows during the day :@.

Throttling targets P2P applications, not standard streaming videos.

It will occur lightly during peak times, but heavily when P2P packets are detected. This is controversial as it breaks the net neutrality ethics, but is not against the law.

Yeah throttling is awful. I have severe connection issues at times, it seems to occur in clusters. I'll get disconnected for about 10 seconds several times and then have no problems for a few hours before the cycle repeats.

                    Given up complaining.

I'm on Be Unlimited. One of the only ISP's not to throttle traffic :)

Nope, not on virgin. They throttle based on your total usage whatever that may be heres a link to explain how it works... crap huh?

If you're download so much that you trip their systems, then you deserve to be capped. That literally means over 10gb's a day!

Tiscali are harsh and they never capped me :|:

Vigin policy applies to everyone no matter if your on a black list or not.
If you read that link i posted it says if you download 500mb between 4 and 9 you get throttled (on 2mb line). When your in a house of 4 people it doesnt take long to do that.
Even the 20mb line only has 3GB limit which is quite a lot but when you got stupid speeds you find yourself goin a bit mental.
