I must ask because I did not see it specified. My uncle was having big problems with his new router. I finally got over there and asked for the install disk, he said he threw it away because he bought the same router as before so he didn't think he would need it.

Even if you get the same router as before, model and everything, you still need to do the complete setup routine for the new router. Make sure you have done this correctly. The installation is not to setup software on your PC, it is for the router itself, without this the router does not have any instructions on what to do. If you are going through another medium (your media box) other than direct ethernet to your box then it will always cause problems.

If you have ran the setup completely, try doing it again, but keeping a close eye on the fine print on every page. Some companies (netgear especially) hide instructions in the fine print, so make sure you read all onscreen instructions.

'Most likely' doesn't really help. We need to know what he has if we're going to make any recommendations. What matters more is whether or not Virgin requires all Mac addresses to be the same. You can read more about it here.

Well most likely does help as you can base some suggestions around an educated guess untill we do know for sure. Im 95% sure he will have the same thing as we do round here which is

cable (or optical, doesn't really matter in all fairness its basically the same asfar as we need to know)

And we all have different mac adresses.

If your PC isnt working when its attached directly to the router 1st try to run ipconfig /renew in command prompt then if that doesnt work just reboot the modem or 'media box' (unplug it for 10-15 seconds) then reboot your comp and that should do it. The modems have a tendancy to lock up if there is any slight loss of communication with it and the server.

If its not working with the new router plugged in then you probably havent configured it properly, read the manual then log into it and follow any instructions it has about setting up the various computers to work on it. I dot knwo anything about the router you have so it hard to make more specific suggestions.

EDIT: - the routeris definately a router and not just a switch right?
If it is a router ensure you are connecting the ethernet from the virgin media modem to the internet in part of the router.

after re-reading instructions and what not i think i now know where my problem lies and that would be the router settings,

i have 3 connection choices, PPPoE, Dynamic IP & Static altho im not too sure on which im required to use (im guessing PPPoE but im a noob >_<) i still have to phone my ISP for some stuff which the instructions say i should get off the ISP (with virgin media? dream on ... :P)

Virgin *might* be able to enlighten you better about what IP setting to use but my guess would be PPPoE aswell. You shouldnt have to get any settings from virgin for the router really though as it should automatically pick up everything it needs from the modem.

No disc? Did you buy this at best buy or walmart? All routers will come with a setup disc. That is unless you got an open box item, which i am guessing might have happened.

Just by curiousity, what router model and manufacturer did you get?

got it from Scan (from shop not website) i didnt buy it but its a lil cheapo £9 thing, doesnt exactly have a brand, just says : Soho Profesional , 4 Port 10/100 MBPS

851W - 802.11 b/g

Does that look familiar? If so, you can download drivers from that page.

where does it fail when you go to your DOS command line and use

then
