Please help: xp takes forever to boot and 123 sesame street user keeps comeing back

There is more than i could fit into the title.

Alright here's the problem. I have a laptop that does not run very well, it takes forever to even load to the screen where i can enter the bios then it takes longer to even start windows, most of the time it will just go to the fat 32 screen even when i tell it to start windows normally.

The time always changes in the bios screen, and the user 123 sesame street will constantly re-appear after i have changed it back.

The computer will not boot into safe mode

I have run macafee and no virus has been found.

If reformatting aint a option give MBAM a try; http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Then try some stand alone root kit scanners;

Only run one at a time, chances are one of them three will find something, after that uninstall macafee and install avast! and run a boot time scan; http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Again, reformatting will be best, but if you can't then the above steps are your best options.

Sounds like you have a nasty trojan/rootkit mcafee is not very good at finding those if iti cannot boot into safemode or regular windows.

I would recommend a full reformat and a bios upgrade to be safe, then you can use your backups for any previous information you need.

Thanks guys but i found out what the problem was late yesterday around 10:00. I worked on the thing for 10 hours and figured out exactly what was going on.

This laptop is my sisters computer, she had changed the name of the computer to 223 sesame street. She was also able to change the power on the CPU down to only 1 core or 799mhz. I fixed both of these problems fairly fast, maybe couple of hours before i noticed the computer properties which said:



When i saw this i thought that my sister somehow changed the bios to only use 896mb of ram. So i worked for another 6 hours searching for how to change the memory back. I knew that the Bios was useless you cant change more the clock, so i tryed to do it from inside the computer.

Than around 9:00pm yesterday i found out why the computer was so slow. I found a forum post for memory problems that said to run a Memory diag. So i did.



As you can see WMATS+ Failed and Microsoft says that any Fails means that the ram is bad. So what im thinking is i have to go out and buy some new laptop ram.

And the reason that i thought that 123 sesame street had kept re-appearing is because after i changed the name of the laptop i tried something else and restarted the computer. Than when i started it up again everything was changed back to what it was.

Failed memory won't create that user, that sounds like malware. Please try re-installing. If your sister's laptop is having the user problem, it could be that the spyware and circulated around your local network.

The laptop is from 2007 and the warranty only covers 1 year.
