Well, if you can afford either, go for the 1GB. It would make sure you could play even if you upgraded your monitor. Plus, unlike before, the 1GB of memory has been proved to increase performance and not just at high resolutions. It really helps in texture heavy games.

I have a 512mb and i notice it sometimes struggles at 1920x1080 at high anti aliasing.

I'd go for the 512MB version at that res. A 1GB card is only beneficial if your playing at very high res like 1920x1200 etc.

On 1280x1024 it wont make a difference, but if he decides to change to say a 24" screen with 1920x1200 it will start to make a difference

im considering moving to 26" soon on 512mb so i should see for myself

Well, i'm 1920x1080 and i do see the shortcomings of 512mb. But don't get me wrong, it's still a great card, just suffer a tad in texture/shader heavy games like Crysis.

I don't plan on getting a new screen anytime soon. I was wondering what if i went with the 512mb and save few more bucks and get a phenom. Right now i have amd 64 6000x2 and a 8800gt. what kind of boost do you think that would give me.

Depends. What sorts of games do you play mostly?

COD 4,5 BF2, 2142 Crysis wars GTA IV. That's about it

If you dont have any plans for a new monitor then go for the 512mb version, more than that makes zero difference at that resolution

Gta 4 would definitely make use of the extra 512mb, as you cannot turn the texture up to high with cards with less than 1GB vram...
