    Phenom 2 @ 6.5ghz video

Cool little video showing AMD overclocking the Phenom 2 being overclocked to 6.5ghz under liquid helium.

It runs at almost absolute zero with no cold bug. If it's that stable, kind of begs the question, why don't they ship retail chips with a higher clock?

Well they still havent reached the traget that they wanted to reach...7.0Ghz..I have seen 6.8Ghz...and now 6.5Ghz, but no 7.

Well the CPUs they use in tests like this are cherrypicked usually from the middle of a good batch so they will be the very best of the batch and the prime example of the chips capabilities. At least it shows good promise for the future of the AMD manufacturing process.

        Re: Phenom 2 @ 6.5ghz video

This reminds me of a thread that showed up on Valve Software's Hardware Forum a few years ago. It was some explanation saying that it was impossible for CPUs to run faster than somewhere in the 5 Ghz area (I don't remember the exact number, it might have been like 5.4Ghz or something), because it would require the electric signals travel across the die at speeds faster than the speed of light, or something silly like that. I never believed it, though it WAS on larger dies that what we have now.

They've been running chips over 5ghz since the old P4 days :p

The guy probably meant it would be possible on the current architecture (at that time).

Nope, he was trying to 'prove' that it was impossible because the electrical current would need to be traveling faster than the speed of light to travel across the die x number of times, with x being the number of clock cycles performed each second by the CPU. (So, 5 Ghz = 5 Billion Clock Cycles each second = traveling across the die 5 billion times each second)

However, a CPU does not work simply by sending electricity across the die a bunch of times.

Looks like that World Record might not actually be a world record.

That new record was done on the 4th of Jan, so it's fairly new :p

Looks like it wasn't counted as the graphics drivers weren't approved.
