how do you do this? because when recording stuff with fraps it produces gigantic video files easily in the multiple gigabyte range what is the best way to compress these files for making a video and uploading to the web?

Avi is a 'wrapper file' which often contains mpeg data. The best thing to do once you have finished editing is to compress them using a H.264 codec. There is a guide here http://teek.info/guides/video/x264encode.html

x264 is far more efficient than xvid and will make uploading to youtube (or whatever) a lot faster :)

Sony Vegas can do almost anything and pretty well. Just not free though..

x264, mencoder, ffmpeg, certain-Xvid-binaries, Nero AAC, oggenc2, LAME, and FAAC would like to have a word with you. Hell, every damn respectable modern encoding format's encoding applications would like to have a word with you.Originally posted by Alex98ukI mean multithreaded conversion app
For the most painless conversion, I suggest encoding into Xvid with MeGUI as a frontend. There are a few things to learn, but it's a valuable skill to know when encoding many FRAPS videos.
