ok this might be bad im not sure

ok i have a wierd problem, take a look at my system on the left if you need to

i have used FRAPS to record a number of video game movies that i made on cheap windows movie maker, published to my computer and then uploaded to the web.

on this computer whenever i was using fraps in the past and recording while i was playing i was able to record at a good solid 60fps that i had set in the options.

then a little while ago i got done making my last movie and putting it together and then uploading it and all that. I tried to record with my fraps program with it set to 60fps and my fps would drop down to 10-15fps and then try to go up to 60 and then drop back down. it would stay very low but kind of spike up and down. this is somewhat unsettling.

ok so i tried a bunch of stuff defragging, using ccleaner, reinstalling fraps, THEN when none of that worked since i didnt have much stuff on my computer i then decided to simply reinstall my whole operating system. i install all my drivers and stuff and reinstall the 1 game and the fraps program. the SAME THING happens. i get really low fps 10-15fps when having it set to 60fps and it spikes up and down a bit.

im wondering at this point if there is actually something physically wrong with one of my cpu cores like the one that is utilized more when recording and rendering video. (whichever core that is)

i did have realtemp installed and i would occasionally check the temperature of the cores and at one point one of the cores' tj max went from 25 to 29 and neither temperature reading for either core changes.

    tjmax core1=25
    tjmax core2=29

and then the temps were similar except 1 was about 4c lower than the other.

Well it might just be 2142. I've made many videos with fraps and even setting it at 60 fps made it still go down to 20-30 even in CSS! My rig is pretty decent as well...so idk.

Try changing to "half-screen", not "full-screen" in FRAPS.

Not really, no. You're not going to watch the video at full screen anyway.

all depends what resolution you gaming at as to wether halsized will be ok. If you game at 1024 x 768 or below then half size will be worthless however anything above that should come out ok. Seems odd that system cant handle it though it really should be so there is somthing not right. One thing that might be worth trying is setting the recording folder to a different hard drive to your operating system. I cant imagine that the game takes up a lot of HDD activity as it is but its worth a shot.

What is your FPS like when your not recording and just playing?

Remember that a lot of online hosting sites will convert the video down to 30FPS max anyway so it might be worth setting that as your recording limit.

i was wondering if you could actually make fraps record at a certain fps but then actually play the game at a different fps..as far as i know you cant do that.

without fraps running the game runs perfect at 100fps locked most of the time

i think there might actually not be a problem which is very good i dont know what the hell the reason is for this but i just went into the game and turned it on and it dropped down really low like it did before but i just sat there for about 20-30 seconds and then it went back up to its usual fps and stayed there. but then that was on an empty server maybe im making this more complicated than it is but then i dont know how all my hardware and software actually works so...

i made a quick video showing the difference.

click on ''the watch in HD''

                  111111111111..aaaa```http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw7Gc5xl0lY

my game is at 600x800 resolution with

high texture, terrain and medium effects, high sound, no lighting or shadows or dynamic stuff and then 4xAA and full texture filtering

btw is there actually any way to STOP the forum from automatically turning a URL into one of those pop-up media squares? because with youtube it pops up the crappy small pixelated version of the video..

this is what my heat sink looks like. i am looking down at it through the top of the case. i dont know if this is normal or not but i would think this is not good. but then if my cpu never has never gone over 35c im not sure how this could happen but then idk its only on one side not both sides

The only thing the resolution will dictate is the size of the video, not the quality, unless you play the video full screen. Increased visual quality from an increased resolution mostly occurs from having a higher resolution image through the same sized space, along with a decreased amount of jaggies. If you have a higher resolution image on a larger screen and compare it to a lower resolution image on a smaller screen, it really isn't going to look much better. Now, if you have a higher resolution on one screen, and a lower resolution on that same screen, the higher resolution image is going to look better.

Since the videos are being scaled by the same factor (Half the size each time), the only noticable difference will be the size of the video. For example, at 1600x1200, the video will be 800x600, while at 800x600, the video will only be 400x300.

This can be observed by taking a screen shot of a game at a lower resolution, and then viewing it in Windows at it's original resolution. Though the screen shot may only be 640x480(or whatever resolution you use), it will still look as crisp and sharp as if the game were at your monitor's native resolution. It's just smaller.

I didnt say they would be wrothless because the quality would be bad, they will be worthless because they may drop below the native res of the youtube (or whatever) codec which means it would upscale it. Im guessing their encoding techniques dont include any advanced proccessing to compensate the lost resolution and quality so it would look poo.

I dont want to go too far into resolution i just finished an exam of HD and D-Cinema today and i have had enough.

To retain the best quality when you editing you may wanna check the resolution frame rate and editing codec that whatever software you are using is set to the same as what its captured with (or at least very similar)

i think even though its twice the hard drive space i feel its worth it to record fullscreen you come out with a better looking/sounding product that is easier to work with

Definately, its always better to capture at higher rest than you need :)
