Um... well, where to start. First, AMD bought ATI about 2 years ago. Intel has never owned AMD, if that is what you were referring to as "under". Intel does have the fastest CPUs right now, with the release of the core i7 architecture. AMD just released the Phenom II architecture which is about even in performance with Intels previous core 2 quad architecture. It does have a better price/performance than Intels older architecture. I believe that should answer all of your questions.
Yep without a doubt but apparently intel are going to slash prices in the next few weeks which should be fun!
Core i5 is coming later this year which is similar to i7 however it has no QPI, a dual channel controller (instead of triple) and an intergrated PCI-E controller (or so i have been told over at hexus anyway) If all this is true im intreged to say the least!
Remember when comparing i7 to PII that the i7 is a DDR3 dedicated system. AM3 (which will have both a DDR3 and DDR2 controller) is also coming this year and whilst i cant see it coming close to the new intel architecture it will still be interesting.

I guess I should have said I still knew everything up until the launch date of the i7 chips. I know intel doesn't have ownership of AMD but they are "owning" amd last time I was keeping up to speed with it.
So bottom line is that intel's attempt to use an AMD setup on the i7 is somewhat fail? C2d is still the best buy? I thought the i7's looked really awesome when they came out and I heard you could OC the 960 EE to 4 ghz on stock air, though its not very stable they admitted.
all and all I'm quite content with my e6600, just I really need to get my mobo checked out and format my pc when I get a chance cuz that shlt is still whacky even after replacing the PSU.
no the i7 is an awesome chip but its just far too expensive. I think the huge costs are party down to the fact the motherboards are both SLI and crossfire compatible so they have to pay royalties to have the stupid SLI sticker on the front of the box.
