Prime Minister Gordon Brown told the Observer newspaper that the creation of high-speed broadband networks could be the modern equivalent of US president Roosevelt’s scheme during the 1930s to get America working again by investing in massive capital projects, such as the freeway system.

That's all well and good but if it's throttled to the end user by ISP then it'll all be for nothing. Although would they stop throttling if the networks could handle the traffic? Not so sure if it would be actually... -

I would imagine the throttling would be the same but not the same amounts... the limits would increase in relation to how much more overall bandwidth there is available and you have to take into account that a fibre optic backbone would increase the overall bandwidth available by insane amounts.
The thing is, with us getting the 2012 olympics something like this HAS to have been brought into use to a certain degree otherwise it will just make a laughing stock of the UK broadcast industry.
The advantages to the end user are just phenomenal in regards to our consumption of media aside from the internet, fibre ip television services (which will no doubt crop up) will have plenty of interactive HD functionality and telecoms can be crystal clear... screw it we will just have video conversations with everyone

Unfortunately, FDR didn't actually do anything to help the US out of the great depression. I actually consider him one of our worst president: he set the tone for useless government spending and entered WWII only after millions had died, when we could have prevented that. Ironically, it was only WWII and the wartime economy that came with it that got us out of the Great Depression. :p

The freeways and electricity to rural areas were useless? I think the public spending helped it become the number one superpower in the 1950's. I agree that the capital spending probably did hardly anything to affect the situation but hoover did nothing and the problem got worse, if the current solution isnt working youve gotta try something else.Originally posted by jake_
How could you have prevented millions of lives being lost in the first two years of WW2? the american army was tiny and had hardly any tanks, artillery of modern fighters it would have taken 2 years for any significant force to arrive by that time hitler would already be marching into russia or maybe focusing on britain so the americans wouldnt have a base to land troops.
Anyway back to topic, the UK's fibre optic isnt going to be routed directly to houses, just to the exchanges that means that the data still has to use the copper phone lines for some of the transportation, that means that even with the upgrade we wont come close to japan, korea or even france who have fibre optic all the way to the buildingComment
