Faster clocks with room to spare, are the Phenom II CPUs from AMD too little, too late?

    As promised

Based on the company's 45nm manufacturing process and brought to market a couple of months after the launch of the similar server part, Shanghai, AMD's Phenom II quad-core processors promise higher clock speeds, to better compete against Intel's Core 2 Quad CPUs.

Phenom II 920 and 940, released at clock-speeds of 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz, respectively, will be available to buy in a couple of weeks. We investigate whether the advancements over incumbent Phenom X4 are enough to make them serious contenders in the <£250 market.

I saw some SuperPi tests of the Phenom 2 on OCN. At 3.9ghz, it was pulling 17 seconds in SuperPi 1M.

To put that into context, my 3.7ghz Q6600 does it in 14 seconds...

        This shall be interesting.

The bit tech review puts things into context slightly better imo

AMD's 45nm consumer CPUs are finally here: the Phenom II X4 940 and 920 are the latest quad cores with bigger cache, more MHz, more overclocking potential and yet, still AM2+ with inexpensive DDR2! Does Intel finally have some worthy competition?

When super pi was released in 1995 the fastest processor the pentuim mmx 90mhz took 3 days to do the 32 million calculation, shows how far processors have come in a decade and a half

Right now sitting in the middle of the C2Q range is not good for AMD, Intel can simply make a few price cuts and bring things back to what it was like before phenom 2 but if AMD can get some new versions of the chip maybe at 3.2 and 3.4ghz soonish then that would make the C2Q range unappealing to people looking to buy mid-range cpu's

thing is im pretty sure AMD have a fair bit of room for price cuts themself. I dont thing AMD have actually set out to thrash Intel right now, they are just getting a workking product to the table so they dont dissapear any further into the abyss.

I doubt AMD have much room to cut prices given they are losing money fast.

ya but these chips are cheaper to manufacture than the previous phenoms due to the reduced man proc.

I dont really think any company has room for price cuts as such atm as they are all losing money i meant more in the schem of things if prices are forces down by intel MD should be able to handle it
