    upgrade ;o

im pretty much looking for an upgrade.. an upgrade that is noticeable by a reasonable margin but not too high on the price side.

    my current spec's are :

    MotherBoard : M2N4-SLI

    GCard : GeForce 8600 GT

    Ram : 2GiB GEIL (DDR2 - 800 MHZ) (gunna upgrade to 4GiB anyway)

    Processor : Amd Athlon 5000+ Duel Core @ 2.81ghz

what i think im in need of is Processor & Gcard, if someone could find/ point me towards a suitable upgrade that will run fine with the MoBo & Ram (4gig will be 4x1 sticks of what is listed above) id love you

(looking in the region of around £200 for processor & Gcard)

on a second note, for some reason they stopped selling the exact ram i have atm..

maybe a dumb question but would :

    GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)

    work with :
    GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Black Dragon EVO ONE DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GE22GB800C4DC)

    Re: upgrade ;o

Yeah you dont have to have the same ram but you may encounter issues when overclocking (if you overclock). How much is that Black Dragon stuff? Might be better off just getting a 2 x 2gb set of corsair ram.

TBH i wouldnt bother upgrading your CPU because the only way it would make sense would be if you went to a C2D/C2Q which would require a new motherboard and £200 doesnt fit in the budget.

I would look at getting yourself just a beasty graphics card but check your power supply first and tell us what brand and model it is cuz u dont want to blow everything up :).

If your PSU is already up to it then get yourself a Radeon HD4870 or a Geforce GTX260 (im gettin one of these soon ). If its not then get yourself a corsair 450W PSU and a Radeon HD4850 or a Geforce 9800GTX+.

Maybe move this thread into the TGN tech centre mate you will get more help over there

I hear endless problems from people who have mixed 2 2Gb kits. Even if it's the same brand and model. I see RAM like underwear only use it fresh.

i got atm in this a 450 watt, but i have a spare 600watt (very good) as a reserve, how much am i lookin at paying for a Radeon HD4870 or a Geforce GTX260? and which is better of the 2, in regards to the ram, ill just buy it, if it dont work ill donate it to someone and buy 4gig together

          Re: upgrade ;o

Wattage doesnt matter mate its the stability of the different supply voltages and the ampares on each line. If they are like £20 budget power supplies then they are unlikely to have any protective features and its nt worth the risk, turst me i have seen the aftermath of cheap PSUs and high drawing componants. What brand/model PSU are they?

Well the 512mb version of the 4870 is about 180odd and the 1GB version is about 200-210 and the GTX260 starts at around £210. If you wait a couple of weeks the GTX may come down in price due to them moving to a small manufacuring process.

In all fairness from what i have seen, both cards perform pretty damn similar. I think the radeon is genrally better for COD and the GTX is better for crysis. Thats serious generalization though.

          here is some benchmarks

              aaarghh no way dude

check this out... 75% load and they blow :o thats seriously not good, dont risk it man. A 4850 or a 9800GTX will still be a massive increase in performance over a 8600GT.

              PSU i would recommend

              4850s

              9800GTXs

With postage should be around 200 :)

Graphics card upgrade would make a good difference, what biscuit said I agree with.

just to throw it in there.

If you decide you want to bump up the power of the PSU rather than getting another 450...

Wont make much diff but still

                        I run 2x 260GTX gpus in my rig and it's a niiiicce.

I just stepped up to the 55nm version which should arrive here soon.

New Nvidia cards come out on the 8th Jan (I think) so the 'old' stuff is dropping in price now. More will come a short while after. The 40nms are due this year as well.

It's the best time ever to be GPU shopping.

There is a huge difference between your 8600GT and the 260s, even the 'older' 192 shader version, you will love the gains.

I have to go out and eat soon but I will look at PSU costs and whatever later.

The 260s have a min req. of 500 watts and 36 amps on the 12v rails.

he needs a new PSU Erby so he cant fit both a GTX and that into £200

Where the fark are Pennywise/Tin Foil when you need them, only people in BFE I'd trust about upgrades, farking about on the Inter-highway again is my guess.

Andeh shouldn't be overly worried about his PSU tbh, the main purchase should be th graphics card, to be frank installing a modified atari console would probably be better than that current card.

Be sure to shop about too, value is to be had these days, picked myself up a lovely Samsung 22" Full HD(1080p) screen for 259 euro 2 weeks ago. Recession me arse.

Dont really see the need to be so condescending.

I think il move this over into the TGN tech centre.
