Well... i assume you mean Intel as opposed to Pentium and probably a Core 2 Duo/Quad at that.

Also, if you are a gamer, you won't be wanting Linux!

I think if you build it from scratch as opposed to a barebone kit you'll get a little more flexibility in the parts.

Any parts you can reuse? Are you overclocking?

E5200, appropriate overclocking/non-overclocking mobo, and a 4850 should be good for your budget I think.

Why Nvidia if I can ask?

If you insist on Nvidia, then a 9800GT is probably the best value card you can get.

If you don't mind rebates, this ram is cheaper. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145184

It doesn't OC well but you won't be OCing that much on a G31 anyways.

should be able to scrape a GTX in the build but really, get a HD4850 they are such better value for money.

There's no need to get a G31 if you're getting a graphics card, and I'd have thought a P31 might be a bit cheaper. :)

                        Yea, G31 is unnecessary.

Except that the Gigabyte G31 is cheaper than the Gigabyte P31. Either is fine for running stock.

iv just switched to vista 64 and the only issue i have had with it is finding other XP computers on the network. Whilst i never saw vista as a bad OS, in it early days a lot of hardware manufacturers took a while to get drivers sorted which caused a lot of problems for custom builders. Things are very different in that regards now and whilst overall vista still isnt as refined as XP was, it definately feels pretty solid to me. I can see why people recommend 4GB with vista though as it does seem to have helped when im running multiple programs.
