WAP's are different from wireless routers

WAP's are for when you want to connect a wired router to a wireless transmitting device, routers on the other hand take signal from the WAN (outside of your local network) and make this usuable on your local network

If thats what your looking to do then go for it, but im not sure what exacly your trying to do

Okay buddy i will lay it out for you.

We have a 3Com router, it is connected to to a phone like wire from the router to a wall socket, atm three systems are using the router and all from wireless network cards.

My mom has her laptop on wireless, i got a wifi network card thats how i get my signal.

I need a device to strenghten this God awful connection and what i am saying is will a WAP do?

Yes, id also buy a 5m CAT5 cable to connect the router to the WAP so that you can put it in an optimal position

You could just buy a good wireless router which would do both, but if you have a large house for example a WAP is better for reasons stated above

As far as I understand, he already has an wireless router, but need to extend its range. Without cabling, which his mother considers rather unfashionable.

The linksys router seems to be able to work as a repeater according to its product page: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper

Wireless Repeater. When set to Wireless Repeater mode, the Wireless Repeater is able to talk to up a remote
access point within its range and retransmit its signal. This feature only works with the Linksys Wireless-G
Router (model number: WRT54G) or another Wireless-G Access Point (model number: WAP54G).
But if you are to believe the documentation, it will only work with another Linksys AP. So maybe you would be better of with something from 3com like your router?
