New speakers

Well I'm looking for some new speakers for Christmas, but I don't know what to get. I would prefer that they be 2.1, but if they just sound amazing then I will get them even if they are 5.1, but 2.1 is still preferable because of limited space. And less than $200, so no z-5500s... :p

Well i personally think all speakers branded as PC speakers are complete garbage (except maybe the few which are THX certified as they are usually pretty decent) they have pants actual frequency responses (ignore the stated response as its only a max and a minimum not a proper range) and the bass cut is way too high which makes is usually completely overpowering and inaccurate. I would suggest you look for some nice 2.0 internal amplified (active) monitors; sound will be much crisper throughout the frequencies, you will still have plenty of bass without it drowning out the tweeters, you dont have to worry about the extra space needed for the sub and they wont be in wierd stupid cases.

I think Edirol, M-Audio and Behringer do some which would fit your pricerange.

Well first of all, M-Audio doesn't appear to make speakers. And second of all, I have absolutely no clue what I'm looking at when I read specs on the speakers. Basically all I know is that high wattage means it's louder and low distortion levels means it's less distorted at high levels.

I've had them for a year now and haven't had one complaint, not one.

I'm thinkin of getting another pair to run 4.2 from time to time or just keep it on my 360.

Well different notes/pitches of different instruments produce different frequencies across the sound spectrum. The human ear can respond to frequencies of around 20Hz to 20KHz although this is different from person to person and most are closer to 30Hz-18Khz. Lesser speakers will often claim to respond to a range similar to what i have stated above however in actual fact there will a huge gap somewhere inbetween the top and the lowest frequency that the speakers can actually handle. This means that you lose an aweful lot of sound information.
The other issue i mentioned was the cross-over point. Many 2.1 speakers have the lower middle frequencies sent to the sub which makes them boomy and ruining the sound completely.

Most people dont know or care about these things and just go for the higher wattage systems because they are louder and have more bass which is perfectly understandable as thats the experience they want. People who do end up buying decent speakers rarely turn back.

Saying all this the Z2300s all the above people have mentioned are above the rest of the 'computer speakers' which is proven by their THX certification. You may also want to check out the JBL Sound Sticks i have heard a lot of people who really like them.

I got the Logitech Z-2300's (THX). Great 2.1 setup but the subwoofer is massive!

I would rather have a subwoofer, because I like my bass loud usually. So which are louder and have a big subwoofer? G51 or Z2300?

The Z-2300 sub is fairly large and heavy. It even has it's own big heatsink on the back!!!
