Also is your old rig AGP or PCIe? If it's AGP, the fasted card you could upgrade to would be a 3850.

Why are people saying that a 4850 is better than a 9800GTX? Just curious. I'm seeing both for the same price in a lot of places and each does a little better than the other in different games. Overall they seem to be neck and neck.

The short answer is "yes". I am currently using a 9800GTX, and it's a very good card. It has no problem running COD4/COD:WW with max settings at 70fps at resolutions of 1440x900. I didn't have the frame-rate counter on when I played the L4D demo, but it was smooth as silk as well.

Since your cpu is a bottle neck I would go for a 9600gt or a 9800gt save yourself the 50$ and it will run cod just fine.

You'll be happy with the 4850 anyway :) It will last a bit longer than say the 9600 GT if you decide to upgrade your CPU

There never was a 3.8ghz pentuim D, the fastest was 3.4ghz

to quickly get the specification of your pc go to start > run > then type dxdiag

then can you post them here, that would help us a lot

                          Re: nVidia GeForce 9800GTX

as Alex said earlier, it comes up as four CPUs because of HT technology which takes two threads from each CPU core making windows think there is 4 cores. Just like on the new i7 chips windows shows up as 8 cores because of a similar use of the technology.

By wattage amounts your PSU should have enough but again i dot know enough about it to say. If your power supply doesnt have a PCI-E adaptor

You may have to use the (should be included in the packaging) 2 x 4 pin molex to 6 pin PCI-E adaptor to make sure the card has enough power running too it.

650 W is plenty for a 4850. It's only the PCIe adapter then that might be a problem as B1scu1t explained.
