Quad core means the CPU chip itself has four CPUs built into it however i doubt one would fit in your motherboard.

If i where you and i was thinking of upgrading i would look at your finances and see if you can scrape together enough for a full CPU RAM + GPU upgrade. Here is an example of a pretty average gaming system.

    GPU 9800GT $100
    Mobo Asus P43 $87
    CPU E5200 (dual core) $83
    Ram 4GB PC6400 DDR2 $43 (if you need it)
Corsair 400W PSU $60 (if you need it)

Total excluding rebates, shipping or whatever else you have to deal with in US is
    $373

Im not saying this is an ideal setup, the cheapest set up or the most effective setup - i will let an american do that as im sure they will better understand the pricing system. What i have done here is give you an example of something that would be worth while.

If you just went for the GPU i listed (which seems to be a pretty good deal to me) i think you would probably need a new power supply but i cant say as i dont know what you have. If you dont want to have to buy both i would go for something liek this.

    LOLWUT?

no srsly i dont get half the stuff you just said.

i have a quad core- idk how fast it is so why would i need a duo core?

You have a quad with a 6800GTX? i think the numbers are all a touch confused here.

What model Dell computer is it? If it is dell.

Im goin off assumptions made from what you said and whatyour system thingy says.

I think he has a 3.8ghz Pentium D with hyperthreading (2 physical cores, 2 logical)?

yeah you will be pretty heavily limited by the speed of your ram and your CPU so i would'nt recommend a GPU upgrade at all right now. If your gunna do anything upgrade the whole machine.

its not the amount of RAM is the speed of the ram. Just as your processor has a speed (3.8GHz?) your ram also has a speed. I think yours is only 667MHz ram but i might be mistaken as i dont really know enough about your PC.

Download some software called CPU-Z and it will give you a bit more information about your PC.

I think it's futile to increase RAM speed. P4/D only support up to DDR2-667, and Intel socket 775-based system is not as sensitive to RAM speed as AMD ones.

If I were the original poster, then I would have stopped thinking about upgrading this aged one. It's simpler to build (or rebuild) a new one.
