Wait wat?

As I mentioned in passing in a thread somewhere my CPU temps were above normal for my case, it's good air flow and my CPU cooler, floating around the 60-65 mark on idle and sometimes reaching 72 under load (Celsius). I was going to open her up clean off the old thermal paste and try again to see if that was the issue this weekend at some point but...

I just booted up my PC after getting home, it was making some form of slightly louder and different noise, almost the sound of the bearings in one of my fans grinding a tad but not loud enough that it would lead me to believe that. It made this noise the entire way into windows and after about 30 seconds after windows was loaded the noise seeming to disappear.

Afterwards I tried turning up my GPU fan to see if I could match the sound to that, it defiantly wasn't that. My CPU fan is at 100% all of the time therefore it can't be that and now for reasons best known to itself my CPU is idling around 43 and GPU 44 (which was around 60 before).

I never noticed visually that any of my case fans were functioning properly or at all, and the noises it's making now are seem to be the same as it usually does.

So how exactly did my PC manage to fix itself?

EDIT: I used Coretemp and IntelTAT and both verify the temps for my CPU, NVIDIA Monitor for the GPU

LOLWUT?!?!?!? Yeah that's kinda dangerouse, Had u messed around with the clock speeds or volts or anything in your bios before hand??

Probably a loose fan motor. I have them on some of my fans :|:

One loose fan motor wouldn't send his CPU into 65c idle though.. Unless maybe if it was his CPU fan...

It could well do if the fan wasn't spinning properly before.

remember dell machines are nto really meant to be played around with by non dell technicians as they are often qite precisely fitted together. One time you open it and fiddle with it it might go back together slightly different to the next time.

I dunno, when i was 16, i had a Dell and the 160gb hard disk broke. I complained and they sent me a server grade 400gb disk (SATA was fairly new then). I rang them up and said i was a computing student and fairly smart and whether i could put the disk in myself instead of a technician having to come out.

To my utter amazement, they said, "yes, your warranty will also stay intact!"

Whilst im quite suprised il still say hard drives are a little different to a CPU cooler!

I dunno, when i was 16, i had a Dell and the 160gb hard disk broke. I complained and they sent me a server grade 400gb disk (SATA was fairly new then). I rang them up and said i was a computing student and fairly smart and whether i could put the disk in myself instead of a technician having to come out.

To my utter amazement, they said, "yes, your warranty will also stay intact!"

yeah I put in more RAM, better PSU and a better GPU in my dell. I could even get a better CPU if I wanted.

oddly enough Q6600 cpu's are tested up to 71C so anything above that it can start throwing up errors because it makes mistakes when running through code

And every 10c you drop extends the life of your cpu by 50% according to one intel enginner

just buy a third party heatsink mine cost me £15 and idles at 42-44c and loads at about 52c thats overclocked to 3ghz with a healthy amount of volts

its now down to a tenner at scan

Not true. They are guaranteed to be stable up to about 90c - 100c, however the heat is damaging.

71C and 1.5v is flouted all over the internet as the figure you should not exceed with G0 stepping (63C with B3)

where they got this figure from im not sure but im guessing if its true it means that after that level of heat perfect cpu operation cannot be guaranteed
