Who's gonna get AMD Phenom II?

Who's gonna get AMD Phenom II next year?

Even if they sell $300 for 940 at retail, the low price of AM2+ motherboard still makes it a deal. Get a cheap 790GX or 750a board, and one should be able to get the thing running at 3.6GHz on air easy. Only if it performs as good as AMD is hyping.......

They'd better be good to justify $350 price tag.

          edit:
It seems that the company's price is bloated. AMD might still be pricing 940 at $300 on newegg ($299.99 free shipping).

I'd like to see real world performance with normal users, not benchmarkers before i buy anything (not that i can afford to :p)

Re: Who's gonna get AMD Phenom II?

If the benchies are true I'd have to state/ask something first.

It would seem to me that Intel believes they have a huge advantage over AMD on all sides fronts asides from AMD's direct memory link with the CPU which intel is now trying to do. Based on the C2D's, intel owned everything and the i7 in my eyes was aimed at the emerging market of HD bluray business (cuz when you think about it, they have a lot of converting to do and its still fairly very new). So I'm guessing intel wasn't focusing so much on gaming performance on this chip this time but rather multitasking hence the HT revive.

Now I'll be honest, I didn't read much about the AMD cpu other than its 3ghz and supposively better than a 940 i7 I think @ stock but if that benchy is true, I'd have to say it would be because AMD has perfected there unique technology that intel has only begun to use as well maybe AMD is trying to get back into the gamers market - After all they do own ATI which is now better than Nvidia asides from the small Adobe thing.

                Thats just my thoughts though.

Im with Alex in that we need to wait for full release and some proper benchmarks before any judgement or decisions to purchase have passed.
Il definately be keeping my eyes open for these things, if it turns out they have C2Q performance at a much better price point then i think a lot of people will be glad to jump back aboard with AMD.
I doubt it will touch the i7, AMD hasnt even meant it to do so. I dont think aging AM2 platform really has the facilities to push quite that high although i may be wrong. They have said that we should be looking at a new socket all together 2 generations away so lets hope that this is good enough to earn them some cheese to put towards a new product for some proper competition in the market again.

Looks good from what ive seen, especially for people looking for a new system for it to sell well it will have to keep below the price of the C2Q 9450

If this chip is any good though all Intel will do will slash the prices of the C2Q range, they can afford to do that, but really cant afford AMD to get a firm grip of the mainstream market where all the large profits are

on a side note i am not really that impressed with the Core I7 range, its only about 10% faster in games clock for clock and the motherboards cost a fortune compared to reasonable prices LGA775 boards

Judging from Shanghai performance, ALU is roughly 5-7% slower than Penryn-based Xeons, while SSE performance is 30-40% slower. FPU is roughly 10% faster. Shanghai's IMC and L3 cache incur much less latency compared to Barcelona core, hence it wins even more on mem through put.

I'm quite tempted to get one if it's cheap enough. However, I still need a better board for overclocking. I feel kind of waste with my milk bottle of diluted Listerine and fish tank pump.
