My Christmas Upgrade?

Alright. I have a fairly large amount of expendable capital available to me this Christmas and am looking for a nice compy upgrade. Here is what I'm thinking about:

So, I have a couple questions.
1. Would all of this play nicely?
2. Does replacing the Mobo screw things up?
3. Should I upgrade to a x64 os?

Wow thats a beast of an upgrade. If you really have to do it now then thats about as top fo the range as you can get. Im not entirely sure if 1800MHz ram is entirely necissary for those chips but i may be corrected.

If your games play ok with your system as it is then i would agree with Dan but if you feel your starting to fall behind then maybe an upgrade is in order. I doubt you would see huge differences in games with just a new CPU ram and Mobo, if you really want to see a boost then you might want to consider a GPU upgrade.

I thought about that too, but Christmas is when I always do my upgrading, mostly because I have the time to do it.

I won't purchasing for a couple weeks, so the price might come down a touch, but thanks for the input.

Kirk, your system at the moment is fine, I'm still running a E6400 overclocked to 3.20GHz and it still does the job - yours is a quad right? I really doubt your going to see performance increase for the price.

No, mine's a dual. It does run everything fine, but I don't want to get behind the times. Should I just drop this and go buy an iphone?

I would really, what do you really use your PC for? Games? I doubt you will see a difference there and then you'll be knackered out of all that $$'s also the new AMD's are coming soon, trust me I have made the mistake of buying the newest stuff right away and found it's not worth it.

Well I think I have been mostly talked out of doing this, but could anyone address my original questions, just in case I do pull the trigger? I haven't ever upgraded a mobo. (I have replaced one, but it was the same model on a RMA)

Intel P4's did before C2D.

Kirk, yeah it should play nicely, replacing should not, some say reformat, others say it can be ok, and yes, do go 64bit.

Nehalem mobos take triple channel DDR3, look for a 3x1 or 3x2 kit instead.

I say wait. You could of course buy all that and get some better performance but not really worth it in my opinion.

I have a similar system to yours and I don't have a problem running any of the games I have on highest settings - par Crysis and Warhead. I doubt you'll need to upgrade until a year or so when you really will see a difference.

1 If you're getting i7 you need a triple channel 3GB or 6GB kit now rather than dual channel.


2 i7 extreme is a total waste of money- the bottom of the range 920 offers mindblowing performance and overclocks insanely well. :)

The new i7's (skt 1366) are not best for gaming. Here at my job, we had someone from Intel come train us on the new CPU they coming out with and all the benchmarks for the i7 showed us that those processors are best at multitasking video and picture applications and are in no way better than the Q9's at gaming.

3. Should I upgrade to a x64 os?

It would be silly sticking with a 32Bit OS for what you want!
