Ok seriously why is it so hard to get a freaking wireless router to work properly? I got a weak a55 wire router from walmart and had it installed and running in under 10 minutes while i was buzzed and i can't get this POS to work properly over 6days.

Not only that, cuz of all the hassle of trying to experiment with the router and then switching the ethernet cable bak to my desktop/laptop has rendered the cable broken somewhere and now I have no internet from it and its not a small one either...

So here I am now frusterated with this wireless router that refuses to work and stripping wires and reconnecting the headers to the ethernet cables, what a lame way to spend a friday nite.

Does anyone own this wireless router by D-Link?

It has a lot of bull shlt in its package, a low end and half price router automatically can set itself up where as this one is plagued with errors in the software.

Most noticably is what the software says to do, if connecting through another router I must disable DHCP and then use static settings which are straight forward up until you click "next" when the subnet mask ip address is now conflicted with the LAN yet the walmart router connected my computers nearly instantly even with out the installation disk.

Woah I'm done venting for now. I give up with this POS tonite. Tomorrow I will directly hook it up to the modem and see where that goes.

my main question...

What is the tool called that one would use to insert wires into a ethernet header? I have to prolly redo two headers properly instead of my quick fixes

If you are not getting a signal from the router try to turn up the routers signal boost. If it is at max already take it back and get something more powerful like a Linksys Wireless Router. You shouldn't really need to read the directions for a router as all of them are the same for the basic user, I only purchase business class routers so the signal is extremely strong and I tune it so it doesn't go outside the house, and use the highest levels of encryption, MAC Address filtering and other goodies included with the more powerful routers.

You will want to pick up a Ratchet Crimper for your RJ45 cables

When you do get them or another product like it remember when you clamp down on the cable, do it with some strength or it wont work, or if it does it doesn't work as good as if you put some muscle into it :).

Lol thanks for the link for the tool.

The router problem on the other hand was nothing like what you thought it was, actually it was something to do with another router I have. Basically, modem > 4 port wire router > 4 port wire/wireless router *new*, and I was having an issue with the IP addresses.

I been through the installation guide on the CD dozens of times and read the manuel over and over again and if that doesn't sound frustrating enough, the manuel was through adobe reader vs handbook not to mention giving me the wrong instructions.

After 2 weeks of double checking where I could have gone wrong and retrying I finally gave in, after the first week is when I returned the product and 4days later I finally called tech support. And you know what the problem was all along? The F'king routers IP address itself, the defualt.. Changing it was a matter of replacing 3 numbers on the ip address line and why they can't just put that part in there manuel I don't know because it still took 30-45 minutes to pump the guy for that answer.

But needless to say I am a very happy camper now. Now all I need to do is fix the cable that runs through the house (one of the two I broke) and then roll up the two spare 150ft'ers I got dangling through the stairs, living room and "the indoor belkonie?". It really looks retarded, glad I can finally rid my sights of that garbage as well as hove freedom to be connected to the internet newhere in the house with my laptops.

One might even ask why I didn't call tech support in the beginning, well we did and they hung up on us (we weren't rude or nething) and already were drinking so we didn't feel like calling back. I guess I have to stop prolonging things.

I don't want to sound cheap or anything but buying that tool in CDN $$ is more like 18.50 and thats before shipping/taxes although I am about to buy something from newegg neways. I just wanted to know it this tool would work too, I've used it before but not to wire headers for ethernet cables:

The product you posted links to is not for crimping RJ-45 cables.
It's normally used for crimping audio cables for you home theater system.

As with the tool I posted a link to, you cut the cable from a wheel of RJ-45 cable to match the link you need, then line up everything then crimp it down and your ready to go.

As you want everything to not come apart right, as CAT5 cable gets expensive if the plastic parts keep breaking on you. Better to do it right the first time around with the right tool for the job :).
