    Gaining HDD Free Space?

I was playing Fable and Fraps was running in the background. Since Fable and Fraps use similar hotkeys, I found myself inadvertently capturing video of myself playing Fable.

After I closed Fable I found that XP had a "your running low on disk space" balloon pop-up in the taskbar. Naturally I was puzzled by this (I had about 6GB of free space before, and I didn't know that Fraps had recorded the videos) and clicked the balloon.

The XP Disk Cleanup box came up and I left it run for a while. Then I ran CCleaner which freed about 60MB, and the Disk Analysis tool in Glary Utilities. Here I found that Fraps had recorded the videos.

Next I closed the XP Disk Cleanup box (as it wasn't necessary), and another window opened saying that the "low disk space was resolved and around 5000MB of free space was there. I was puzzled again, since I hadn't deleted the video files yet.

I opened up My Computer and clicked on my C: drive and found that there was 6GB of free space. I refreshed My Computer and clicked on the C: drive again, now there was around 6.2GB of free space. I waited for a few minutes to see where this would take me. It stopped at 15.4GB of free space, and I still hadn't deleted the Fable videos.

Now I have deleted the video files and free space is sitting at 21.4GB. Where did the free 15GB come from?

Your computer was probably using a very large amount of virtual memory which caused you to loose so much space so quickly since you only have 2GBs of RAM your virtual memory will be very large during memory intensive things like capturing video in real time uncompressed..

and seeing as you're the type of person who says they expect to have 6GB left on their hdd, then there must be loads of crap on there.

Defrag and run CCleaner now and then.

In my computer, right click the primary drive, properties, disk cleanup, more options, then click clean up at bottom. You will see a huge release of hdd space, then just create a new system restore!
